“Worth stopping by”

Staff was very friendly and eager to help. Breakfast room was WAY too small and many people left because there was no where to sit and eat. Seems to me if you are paying for a meal, you should provide enough room to take advantage of what you paid for. Room was nice and had a good shower.

“On the Fence”

We stayed at Gabriel's Guest House for 6 nights. When we got there we were informed that our Expedia purchase did not include breakfast so we would have to pay 10 euros per person per meal...needless to say we had not planned on this and 2 of us ended up not eating breakfast due to the added cost. The rooms were decent but small. If you are looking for comfort or amenities this is not the place. There is no blow dryer, no iron, no microwave, no refridgerator, no phone, no alarm clock. We were not able to plan smaller meals at the hotel due to this, and had to worry about being up on time. The hotel does not offer wake up calls as they do not provide in room phones, but did give us one wake up knock after much asking. There was a 10 euro holding fee to borrow the adapters so that was helpful. Our bed sheets were never changed in the week we stayed there and the floor was never vacuumed. We had to ask several times for clean towels as they took ours away and didn't bring new ones. The hotel is on the top of a VERY steep hill, so if you have asthma, difficulty walking or fatigue, this is not very convenient as a cab from downtown to the hotel is between 6 and 8 euros each time. The hotel doesn't provide transport to and from the airport so that's at least another 20 euros each time. There is no elevator so you must haul your luggage up at least 2 flights of stairs. There was no heat or AC for us so it wasn't always comfortable. Overall not awful, but not what I was expecting.

Area recommendations
Downtown Cork is very nice, but is much like any city. Spend some time checking it out and then head out and about. we took the train to Fota and Cobh-it was very reasonably priced and was a nice day out. The Wildlife Park in Fota is worth the visit! We also took 2 Paddywagon tours and they were awesome! It was educational, fun and very enjoyable for all of us! Blarney Castle is a MUST SEE!!!!! It is gorgeous and a great way to spend a day or two.
What to pack
Definitely pack layers!! In one day, we had on hoodies and scarves, short sleeves and raincoats. I got sunburnt and froze all in the space of a few hours. The weather can change in an instant, so be prepared!
Shopping
Make sure to ask if they can process your credit/debit card with US dollars. Many places can but won't offer...this will save you hassle and conversion fees!! Carroll's Irish Gift shop in downtown Cork has many interesting gifts and souveniers at very reasonable prices and will process in US dollars. Dunnes Dept. Store is interesting because it's like a JCPenney's but with a grocery store in the basement! The conversion rate is basically 60 cents on the dollar right now, so plan accordingly...US money does not go nearly as far!!
Dining
Scott's in downtown Cork has the most AWESOME chicken wings and vanilla ice cream!! Delicious!! The Zanzibaar in downtown Cork has a "Godfather" pizza that is amazing. Clancy's in downtown Cork is really great for a sitdown and relax meal with live music starting around 9:30ish most nights.

“Great service, hotel did the job”

No lift so had to walk up to the 4th floor - didn't bother me as am fit, but may bother many. Great service at front desk. Driveway steep with sharp corner that some may find difficult to navigate. A decent walk up hill from the city center. Cork itself is not that easy to navigate around.

“A warm welcome at Gabriel House”

A warm welcome and hot tea was waiting for us at The Gabriel House. Kathleen made us feel so comfortable and was so kind to Maggie, our 10 year old. She even took her to help feed the chickens. Up a steep hill sits the mansion of a former merchant prince. An easy 5 minute walk to many restaurants and a bit further across the bridge to the city centre. The room was spacious and the beds comfortable. Breakfast was incredible with many choices, including porridge with Baily's.

“Good for the price”

Our stay was pleasant. The room was perfectly good although nothing special, the breakfast was nice and the staff helpful. It's one of Cork's cheaper hotels, probably because it's a 5-10 min walk from the city centre (served by a bus route), up a reasonably steep hill and doesn't have a lift. If you are looking for a good reasonably-priced stay and don't mind carrying your luggage up a couple of flights of stairs, it's a good choice of hotel.

Area recommendations
Cork city centre
Must see
The Crawford gallery is one of the best galleries in Ireland. I'ts open Mon-Sat, entry is free and there's a free guided tour twice-daily.
Dining
Zak's in Cork city centre is a very nice restaurant, serving a mixed fusion menu with everything from steak to thai fishcakes.

“Charming building, but sketchy management and service”

The builidng is charming and the location of the hotel looked very central on the map, but the quality of service at this hotel is very sketchy. First, the person at reception gave us entirely inaccurate directions about public buses to the Cork City Gaol, one of the main historic attractions in Cork. We double-checked her directions with a bus driver, because I thought they contradicted what I could see on the map, and he confirmed that her directions would have taken us miles out of our way. Second, the fire alarm went off in the middle of the night, the guests all evacuated, and no one -- neither hotel staff nor the fire department -- came for more than 45 minutes. Eventually the manager arrived and turned off the alarm and told everyone it was "safe" to return to their rooms. The fire department never came, despite a loud, constant alarm, and several guests were still anxious that their safety was at risk. I'd stay someplace else if I were to go back to Cork.

“Cork's Traveller's Treasure”

Gabriel House was one of the best places I stayed during a month-long trip to Europe. It was very comfortable and had a laid-back ambience, a smart, courteous staff, and a great location. Breadfast was exceptionally good. Even the local rooster was considerate and did not crow before 9:00. Would be hard to imagine anyone not liking this place.

Area recommendations
Walked all over Cork City day and night but particularly enjoyed the center city and the English Market as well as walks along the river. People were uniformly warm and welcoming. Found Cork to be as interesting as Dublin and Galway. Anyone who enjoys Ireland should go there.
Must see
The English Market in Cork is extraordinary. Over a city block in size,it is a showcase of local fruits, vegetables, cheese, etc. Great sandwiches made on the premises. Not to be missed.

“Tops in Cork”

We were in Cork over Christmas--normally a very difficult time for a B&B. The staff kept the place running, answered all our questions and managed to serve breakfast (on an abbreviated schedule). We had a wonderful view of the city from our room. Although we drove, the hotel is a short but uphill walk from the train and bus stations. A good choice for anyone visiting Cork.
