“A lovely relaxing stay.”

This is the second time I have stayed at the Balcon. I really recommend booking a balcony room, the view of the mountains and coast are stunning. The garden/pool area is pretty and relaxing, and the staff are helpful and informative. The atmosphere at the hotel is lovely and laid back, and visitors to the cafe are a mixture of guests and locals. It is only a very short walk to other cafes and bars in the village. I definitely recommend this hotel for a relaxing mountain break!

“Great Hotel”

All the staff were excellent from the cleaning ladies to the reception staff. Its the first time we actually got a kettle and two cups in our room when asking during booking process. This added attention to our personnel needs help make the stay more pleasurable. We had a double room on the rear with views down to the coast- there are some rooms facing the road but I would pay the extra like we did for a balcony room. The room was large with a double bed and single bed. The hotel was clean and very comfortable. The breakfast is a basic continental breakfast with the usual bread , ham cheese, meats, cereal etc. A cooked breakfast is available at an additional charge but this is never offered so I guess you need to ask. We did eat at the hotel once for the Saturday BB-Q and again one afternoon. Both meals were good. I would recommend this hotel to friends and family. As Competa is a small village in the mountains you will need a car to get there. If you do hire a car contact the hotel first for the best approach as the Sat Nav took us to the main square which only has a pedestrian route to the hotel. The swimming pool is nice and clean but is not for serious swimmers. You can still swim in the deep section for a short while. The hotel is also open to locals. We stayed in early July and it did not seem too busy.

Area recommendations

Competa is a lovely white washed village and has easy access to all parts of Competa so long as you can walk. I would recommend a visit to Alhambra Palace in Granada and Nerja Caves (if you have a car). We went for the walking and their are various walks you can do from Competa. Marco Polo a shop just off the main square sells many walking maps and routes as does the hotel. It is too hot to do any serious mountain walks in July and August but you can still do various walks of different degrees of difficulty. I would recommend taking a 20 mins walk along the goat path to the next village Canillas de Albaida and eating in Albaida. Excellent bar and Restaurant. I would also recommend drinking in Alicats as this has many ex-pats who can give you pleanty of local knowledge.

When to go

If you are going for the walking then spring time is the best time as temperatures in the summer are very hot and you need to carry a lot of water or chose your routes carefully so you can pick up more water on route either from a village or a natural source.

“Nettes Hotel in schöner Umgebung”

Man sollte sich darauf einstellen, daß dies ein 3 Sterne Hotel ist, dann kann man über die kleinen Mängel hinwegsehen und sich wohlfühlen. Wir hatten ein Zimmer mit Blick bis zur Küste, sehr schön. Die Umgebung bietet viele Möglichkeiten zum Wandern, man kann es aber auch gemütlich angehen lassen und das Leben in einem netten Örtchen mit vielen Restaurants und einem trotz vieler Urlauber gut funktionierendem Alltagsleben genießen.
