Wander past the lavishly painted walls of this historic gallery and enjoy the collection of fine art showcasing Bolognese art history.

Compact and impressive, Bologna’s Communal Collection of Fine Arts (Collezioni Comunali d'Arte) gives a thorough overview of Bologna’s art scene with artworks spanning from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. The collection consists of mostly paintings, but it also includes sculptures, furniture and other artifacts.

Founded in 1936, the gallery is located in what were once the lodgings of the Papal Legate. To this day, the rooms are still very much true to their former appearance, with original decorations that largely date from the 15th to the 18th centuries. Marvel at the beautiful interior that includes frescoes, a wooden ceiling and vaults. Make your way through the individually furnished rooms and be transported back to another point in time.

The 250 paintings and other artworks within the collection vary greatly. Some older pieces include painted wooden medieval crucifixes from various churches in the area. Newer artworks incorporate neoclassical and art nouveau designs in paintings. Study collections in these styles by prestigious Bolognese artists Pelagio Palagi and Cincinnato Baruzzi.

The Communal Collection of Fine Arts is open from Tuesday to Sunday. Admission is free for those under the age of 19 and for everyone on the first Sunday of each month. It is also included on the Bologna Welcome Card. When searching for the collection, look for the Collezioni Comunali d'Arte, as the English translation is not used.

The artworks are located in the Palazzo d’Accursio or Comunale along Piazza Maggiore. Nearby are many more attractions to see. Start in the Palazzo Comunale itself, a 14th-century palace that was once a government building and is now a working town hall. Entrance to the building itself is free. Go to the second floor where the art collection is located for great views of the piazza. Nearby are the Basilica of San Petronio and the Archaelogical Museum.

While you’re in Piazza Maggiore, it’s definitely worthwhile to visit the small but beautiful Communal Collection of Fine Arts to view iconic examples of Bolognese art.
