“Disappointing Hotel Experience”
The Star Dom was difficult to find, and a bit further from where we expected in terms of proximity to the Koln Cathedral (Dom), but once we found it, it seemed quaint enough. That was only the lobby, though, b/c they were not able to check us in, so we left our luggage in the hallway, since they wouldn't give us another suggested area and said that would be fine, and then we went for a stroll in the city. When we returned, the hotel receptionist handed us a business card and directed us to the sister hotel down the street: the Drei Konige. Although this hotel was in a quieter location and a bit nearer to the Dom Koln, it was extremely smokey (we had reserved non-smoking rooms), and we did not get the rooms we had reserved to sleep 4 people each. Instead, we had to divide up 5 and 3, as the hotel tried to accomodate by placing some extra mattresses on the floor of one of the larger rooms. The rooms were not very well-maintained: the carpets were in terrible condition (dirty, stained, and old looking), one of the mattresses had caved in, the shower door was falling off, and the towel rack fell to the floor as we were replacing our towel upon first using it. The breakfast, however, was included and there was a decent spread of items available--the fried eggs and the coffee were good. While we thanked our lucky stars to have heat and warm water, the hotel experience was very disappointing. We will not stay in either the Star Dom or their sister hotel, the Drei Konige, again.
