“Excellent location, disappointing hotel”

My husband and I stayed at this hotel 2 nights. We were only in Cologne for the weekend and the purpose of our trip was to see the Christmas Markets. The location of the hotel is absolutely excellent - right next to the train station, the cathedral and the markets. However, the hotel itself was not as advertised. The hotel is more a hostel than a hotel. The room was tiny and very basic, and it was also very noisy, even during the night which made it difficult to sleep. You can hear the guests in the hall and also there was a lot of noise as though they were moving furniture at very odd hours. The breakfast was also extremely basic and so much preferable to just grab something from the markets just down the road. Despite the bad points, I would still recommend the hotel as the location is extremely convenient and it was ok in terms of cleanliness.

“It was okay.”

The convenience surpasses all the rest. I'm not sure all would be satisfied with the general condition.

“Cheap place”

If you are only looking for a room to sleep in and dont want any real extras, stay here. The price for the internet was way too much. If you are traveling with anyone more than yourself, you have to make several trips up the elevator that doesnt care if you are all the way in or not before it decides to close. Dont expect any room in the rooms or bathroom. The "tub" was less than a two foot square.

“not impressed”

Standard of maintenance poor, although rooms clean.Little clothes storage space. TV reception poor.Breakfast limited and hot food awful.Staff not particularly friendly.Very noisy, partly outside and lack of thought by other residents.Unusually poor for Germany - previous stays in other hotels/Cities have been excellent.

“Great city, hotel not so great”

Hotel looked lovely when I booked online, walked past it several times though before I actually discovered the place, just a makeshift sign above the door. Room was fine, clean & comfortable although was a bit bizarre having to lug my bags through the kitchen of a Chinese resturant to get to my room. It was a great location, perfect for the Dome & the river/old town, but very very noisy even with windows shut. Breakfast was good though. I would return to Cologne, although not to this hotel.

“If not for the smells, this would be a fine place!”

The hotel has three wings - and most of us (we had 14 rooms as a group) were in the third wing - we had to walk through a chinese restaurant, and the smell was overpowering, whether it was early in the morning or late at night. The front desk service was reliable and friendly (for the most part; the night shift person had issues with our group walking in and out late at night).

“Central Hotel Am Dom, Cologne, November 2010”

Central Hotel Am Dom, is very close to the train station, the Dom and the rest of the old town. Worth noting it's only a 2.40 euro train ride from the airport to the central train station. The entrance to the hotel is not that clear from the street, deing a glass door with the hotels name on it next to a corner shop (which is open late at night if you need to get any snacks). If you ask people for the hotel Dom they will direct you to the more impress hotel of that name in the main square. The reception is clean and the staff were friendly and well organised. They only have old fashioned keys not magnetic cards so you need to leave it at reception each time you go out, which makes it difficult if there are two of you getting back at different times. Our room was on the first floor and we only used the lift once as it didn't inspire confidence, but the stairs are near by. As stated in some other reviews you do need to pass by some kitchens to get to the stairs but they are for the hotel not the chinese restaurant next door, although there is a direct access to it. Our room was on the small side and it and the bathroom were dated but clean. The cleaners come each morning to refresh the towles but if you put the do not disturb sign on your door they will lelave fresh towles outside your room. Worht noting breakfast is 9.90 euros, but there is a bakery 2 minutes walk away. The hotel is very well positioned only a feww hundred meters from the Dom and museums.

“Good base for city centre”

OK, clean, with tea & coffee making facilities and safe in the room. Very well placed for the centre with the station and cathedral only a few minutes away.
