“Poor value for money”
Good location but old cramped and poorly maintained. Very bad value for money
“Best location”
Probably one of the best loctions of hotel right in the mix of everything
“Very convenient to the train station”
This hotel is a great value. Rooms are very small but the bed was comfortable. I often take the train from Paris to Koln, stay overnight in Koln and finish the trip by train the next day. Rarely more than 10 hours between check-in and check-out. Hotel is 10 minutes walk from the station. Breakfast was excellent.
“Central Hotel Am Dom, Cologne, November 2010”
Central Hotel Am Dom, is very close to the train station, the Dom and the rest of the old town. Worth noting it's only a 2.40 euro train ride from the airport to the central train station. The entrance to the hotel is not that clear from the street, deing a glass door with the hotels name on it next to a corner shop (which is open late at night if you need to get any snacks). If you ask people for the hotel Dom they will direct you to the more impress hotel of that name in the main square. The reception is clean and the staff were friendly and well organised. They only have old fashioned keys not magnetic cards so you need to leave it at reception each time you go out, which makes it difficult if there are two of you getting back at different times. Our room was on the first floor and we only used the lift once as it didn't inspire confidence, but the stairs are near by. As stated in some other reviews you do need to pass by some kitchens to get to the stairs but they are for the hotel not the chinese restaurant next door, although there is a direct access to it. Our room was on the small side and it and the bathroom were dated but clean. The cleaners come each morning to refresh the towles but if you put the do not disturb sign on your door they will lelave fresh towles outside your room. Worht noting breakfast is 9.90 euros, but there is a bakery 2 minutes walk away. The hotel is very well positioned only a feww hundred meters from the Dom and museums.
“It was okay.”
The convenience surpasses all the rest. I'm not sure all would be satisfied with the general condition.
“Is there room at the inn?”
I stayed twice at the Central Hotel Am Dam. The first time I went to check in, they said that they had my reservation but no rooms, they would put me up at a less convenient facility, that I could walk to if I wanted. When I told them that such was unacceptable, after five minutes they found a room for me. The second time, they said the only room they had was in a different section of the hotel, on the fourth floor, with no elevator. When I refused this, again they found a room on the fourth floor where there was an elevator. Of course the elevator was broken when I checked out two mornings later. Other than that, everything was fine. The rooms were clean and modest, the desk staff was friendly, and the location was very convenient to the Cathedral, the Christmas market, the shopping streets, the main historical museum, and the train station.
“Only if desperate”
Well located. Room was clean, but the hotel is old and shabby with minuscule elevator that fits only 2 people. Walls are very thin and you can hear noisy neighbours across the hall. It's good for one night... if you are desperate.
“Good location, tiny room”
Its good if you are looking for a place to sleep but not to hang out. Great location to Hauptbahnhof and Dom!
“Good value for money”
the toilet is too small to use
“Definitely not a 3-star hotel”
Stayed for one night, arrived at 9 pm and were greeted by a confused receptionist in broken German. Personnel far from friendly. No such thing as a lobby, front desk looked like a pawn shop. Lift made terrifying noises and stops on a different level than the floors, so half a floor to walk up. Not a good idea when travelling with a heavy suitcase. The corridors could have been straight out of a horror movie, they were claustrophobic, had dirty walls and were smelly. The room was tiny, a bit dirty, had the smell of stale smoke (the flies living in the room did not seem to mind) and a horrible double bed that was barely useable by two persons and surrounded by dirt. The matress was of poorer quality than in most youth hostels. Bathroom was okay, although tiny and the shower was broken. We had chosen the hotel because of the location - it was excellent, only a few hundred meters from the main station. For the price we paid we felt ripped off, but as it was late we did not bother to complain since we assumed that the other rooms would have been as bad as ours. Never in my life I will stay there again and would not recommend this hotel even if it's free.
