Hotel was lovely, clean and very central. However, staff were very unsure about certain queries e.g. Parking. Could not tell us before hand the rate for parking. Just gave us a "guess". When we were leaving they told us we didn't need the ticket stamped, that we were to just say that we had stayed at The Mercantile. This was not correct and resulted in us not getting any discount off parking and had to pay the full price as we did not have time to return to the hotel to get it stamped. Also, there is no chance of checking in before 3pm. Even if rooms are ready.
This is one of the better hostels. Rooms hold as few as 2 people all the way up to dozens. We chose a four person room, and the price was great. The continental breakfast was simple, but filling. There was a lift, too, which was extremely nice. It is on Fleet Street in Temple Bar, so bring ear plugs if you are sensitive to noise. I am a light sleeper and had no problem with the ear plugs. People who choose to stay in a hostel need to remember that they are NOT hotel rooms. You will be bunking with strangers, the rooms will be small, there is no daily maid service, and you will have to share a toilet and shower. However, you will meet many nice people and have a really fun time.
I stayed in a 4 bed private room with three friends. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was clean and a good size for what we paid. My only complaint is the the bathroom was really tiny. The shower, sink, and toilet occupied a floor area smaller than one of the bed mattresses.
This hotel is in a perfect location. 15 minutes by taxi from the port @ about €15. There is a Tesco right across the street plus a chemist one block away. It goes without saying there is a ton of pubs , gift shops and cafes surrounding the hotel. I will definitely stay here again. Violet at the front desk made reservations for us and was a pleasure!
A very comfortable hotel, set in a busy street in the heart of the tourist quarter. Difficult to access by car (one way systems, road works, bus lanes, rush hour, tourists etc) but I'd stay there again.
