I was working all week at Altham and liked the look of the place. The price was competitive. So I booked up.
Pulling into the curved driveway, the building is presented like a large farmhouse. Plenty of parking space and the front entranceway is obvious enough. Squirrels are dashing about on the lawn - like an oasis in the suburbs.
Walked in and the check-in was easy enough and fuss free. I was prepaid having booked with Expedia. There is a bar behind reception - small and generally manned by the receptionist - and here's where I had a problem with the Sparthhouse. As friendly and nice as the staff are - they are expected to cover the reception, the bar and the restaurant. It was very quiet when I checked in on the Monday night so I had no probs getting a drink, order a meal and get served. Tuesday morning I walked down the stairs - said good morning to the receptionist and walked into the dining area, then sat there for fully ten minutes so I had to go back to reception and asked to be served, and she said - "Yes - be right there". SHE WATCHED ME WALK INTO THE DINING AREA AND SAID GOOD MORNING AND LEFT ME SITTING THERE. The same thing happened in the evening and they had staff on in the night to cover the dining area. She rushed in and out dropping off a menu in front of me - and then came back 10 minutes later - I didn't even have a chance to tell her I was ready to order the first time. Very frustrating.
On the plus side, the food was terrific.
