It is central to Chumley, pleasant staff, good ale. Cold at night, (limited heating and poor insulation) very noisy on a Saturday until the the late hours. (entertainment area right outside bedroom) Food was very poor. No staff available outside of opening hours. (Had to leave without finalising food bill as no staff available). Breakfast served in another establishment (short walk)

Couldn’t fault the Red Lion Hotel. Friendly, attentive staff with great staff. Breakfast was superb, we had a lovely room and a really comfortable stay. Highly recommend and hope to revisit one day. Thank you all.

Right at the heart of the village so convenient. The room was fairly recently updated and well appointed (and warm at a very cold time). You can eat in the pub part of the hotel or in the restaurant (the pub section was colder). Staff were pleasant and helpful. We stayed 2 nights. The restaurant seemed understaffed on the second night so things were very busy for the waitress who coped quite well. Breakfast was substantial. on the first morning it was served over the road at a bakery/café as the chef had an appointment. That was a good breakfast too!

Great Village Pub
Decent room and really good shower. The pub food was great. Surprised to find that we had to go over the road for breakfast to the Old Dairy but the full English was lovely, the place was really interesting and the owners were really friendly.

What a pleasant surprise. This was a very nice spacious room. It was quiet and clean. Food was good and the service was very good as well. Only complication was checking in on Monday-we were not aware they wouldn’t be open until 5.

Clean and comfortable room. Nice food but had to eat early as restaurant sold out. Delicious breakfast, pleasant staff. Bed was too soft for my liking. Plenty of parking. Quaint town.

We have stayed at this property a dozen times and can always guarentee a decent meal at the red lion chumleigh. However on this occasion we had a terrible nights sleep. The mattress was awful. Like sleeping on springs. ( room 5 ). Could do with some new mattress. We will try room 3 next time.

Stayed for three days visiting family nearby. Staff were friendly, personable and helpful throughout, even during a very busy Halloween event. Breakfast and evening meals of a very high standard and good value. Room and facilities clean, modern and quiet.

Spent three days here over the bank holiday weekend. Room was tastefully decorated with a comfy four poster bed. Large bathroom with great shower. Food in the restaurant is varied of a high standard with good sized portions. Breakfast was excellent. The staff could not of been more friendly or helpful and should we find ourselves back in Devon again I would not hesitate to return.

I enjoyed my stay here immensely. Just the right level of professional and quality delivered casually. Menu had great options and my choices were executed with delicious results. The bedroom and en suite bathroom was clean, comfortable and tastefully minimal. Also quiet. Staff were all super friendly and helpful. Easy convenient parking and great rates, the only dreary part is that I don't yet have plans to bring me back to the area because I would like to stay there again.

Excellent value for money
Free parking, friendly staff very comfortable bed modern bathroom. Food excellent and very reasonably priced only problem asked for Breakfast at 8.30 and know one was there except the maintenance man. After a phone call all was sorted and the staff very apologetic and the breakfast was worth waiting for. Would definitely book again

This is a very rural small town with the Red Lion in the centre. The hotel has its own small convenient car park. Some rooms are at the back and are quiet, other rooms are above the street and can be noisy. Good size rooms and bathrooms with excellent showers. Great atmosphere in the bar and good food. The whole place needed a good clean with unacceptable levels of dust and cobwebs. Comfort of the rooms was not good as furniture placement was not designed for practical use, but more for the visual effect. The staff were lovely. Very friendly and helpful.

A great nights sleep
We used the Red Lion as a stopover for one night. Its was very clean, the room was large, along with the bathroom. The beds were very comfy and the room was surprisingly quiet for a room above a pub. The staff were very friendly and we had a lovely breakfast in the morning to round things off. My only minor criticism would be that they advertise a vegetarian breakfast but we were told that it needed to be ordered in advance if I wanted veggie sausages. This was not a major problem and I went without the sausages but if we had been made aware I would have requested it the night before.

Beautiful place, would highly recommend
We had a lovely night here with our 7 and 8 year old daughters. We only stayed one night but are planning on staying for two on our next trip. All the staff were really friendly and attentive. The room was big, modern, clean and comfortable. We had a beautiful evening meal at a very reasonable price and the breakfast was delicious. Looking forward to visiting again.

Paid £160 for two nights... very disappointing experience. On the second day the room was not serviced at all. When we went down to breakfast at 09:15 the dining room was in total darkness. Apparently, the chef forgot to show up. After talking to previous guests, this seems to be a regular occurrence. Note to anyone who considers staying at the Red Lion... leave your expectations at home. The Red Lion is in a beautiful part of Devon. For what was once a popular village inn, it is a shame the quality has fallen to such a low level.
