Pretty to look at, only ok to sleep & eat in
Breakfast was mediocre, lukewarm, and exactly the same each day, which is a drag when you're staying multiple days. Coffee was quite dreadful. Thankfully I was the only one in the bed, as it had a person-sized divot in the middle from all the previous occupants; new mattresses or at least turning them would be a plus. Asked for a new lightbulb in my room as it was missing entirely, took them 24 hours and 2 requests to brig one. Charged an additional "service" fee on top of my Hotels.com prepaid in full fee, neither of you will cop to it, so this may be my last stay with both Margarita and Hotels.com.

Dear Susan, Thank you so very much for staying with us and thank you as well for completing a review about your experience at the Margarita European Inn. We try our very best to make sure that our guests leave our little Inn with a smile on their face and a warm memory in their heart. In your case we obviously missed out on that opportunity and I feel horrible. From reading your review I gathered that you were not at all satisfied with our breakfast. Normally speaking our guests rave about our breakfast and I am wondering where we went wrong in your opinion. Perhaps we can add certain items that would make the breakfast more enticing for you. In regards to the mattress, I apologize that you felt the bed was not comfortable at all. We do rotate our mattresses every 3 months. I wish I would know which room you stayed in, so I can follow up on this, and if need be replace the mattress. Unfortunately it seems that we also failed to take care of your simple request, to replace a missing lightbulb. I apologize and agree that there is no excuse that we did not take care of this immediately. This is not the way we aim to take care of our guests, and I will most definitely follow up with my team, and try to find out how this could have possibly happened. Of course this does not help you or change your experience with us. As far as the $5 service fee is concerned, we have been charging this to our guests ever since we opted in to have green energy delivered to our hotel. The very least I can do is to refund this to you. I would really appreciate it if you could follow up with me, so I can take care of that and follow up with my team. I do sincerely hope that you will come back and try us out again and see for yourself that this is really not how we typically take care of our valued guests. Two relaxing evenings in a quiet neighborhood
Elegantly furnished, reminiscent of early 20th century design. Nice change from today's modernistic interiors, which begin to look all the same. Bountiful breakfast choices.Walking distance to interesting attractions.

The Inn had a very fun old world feeling. Very unique compared to the steel and glass jungle hotels. Small but comfortable room. I couldn't get the shower water temperature as warm as I like.

Dear Guest, Thank you so very much for being our guest at the Margarita European Inn! I love how you described your experience with us. The whole reason why we love working at our property so much is exactly because we are not like the "steel and glass jungle". Yes, operating a hotel in an almost 100 year old building is fun, but at times also a bit challenging. A lot of the plumbing is original to the building and designed in a time when we were a boarding house with shared bathrooms. We have added 2 water heaters and 99% of the time that is more than adequate to get hot water to all our rooms. But if all our guests shower at the same time, we may in very rare occasions be at capacity when it comes to providing hot water. Just to be sure, I will check the temperature settings on the water heaters. We hope to see you come back many more times, one thing is for sure, we will be here waiting for you with open arms! The hotel is quaint with a large, lovely breakfast room and a good breakfast. Our room was comfortable and quiet. Location is perfect for walking to shopping and restaurants or the trains. It is an older building that opened as a boarding house for business women in the 1920’s. Rooms are small, the elevator only holds 2 people, and parking is behind the building and a short walk down the alley. I was fine with it, my husband wasn’t as keen. For the price and convenience, it is fine. If you have trouble walking or climbing stairs, this is probably a challenge.

I do apologize about the parking situation, I understand that it may be a bit of an inconvenience to have to walk from your car to the hotel. Back when they built a lot of these buildings in the 1920's there was not really a need for parking, so unfortunately parking in Evanston has always very limited. Luckily we were able to lease the parking that we have. I am not 100% what room type you stayed in, being an older building, we have a wide variety of room layouts. Some are a bit bigger than others. Quaint lodging for a weekend getaway
We are repeat visitors to this establishment. We love the ambiance and history of the building. We enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the parlor and the fact that we can walk to restaurants and shops nearby. It's an easy drive via Lake Shore Rd/Sheridan to and from downtown Chicago too.

It's a small hotel with a small cage elevator which adds so much character. The breakfast includes selections from their own French Pastry Chef. The croissants are superb! The lobby staff was engaging and informative. The rooftop a must-see even if not in season.

Would definitely recommend!
The Inn was very comfortable and reminiscent of another era where personality imbued facilities and uniform sterility was not the norm. We found everyone very pleasant and eager to be service.

A little refuge in a great location
This place is an amazing gem, very quiet, great breakfast, large, comfy room and there is even a library for guests on the landing. I will definitely go back. Grateful to have discovered it!!!

Yes, you should stay here. Do not go for a cookie cutter hotel when you can stay somewhere unique and elegant with comparable luxuries. Loved the front desk reception. The room was beautiful. The neighborhood was entirely desirable. Parking was simple— I could have found street parking, but for a nominal fee, I was able to park in a lot behind. Think downtown Chicago valet prices are 6 to 7 times what I paid.

Operating a hotel in an almost 100 year old building is fun and exciting, but at times also challenging. During our last major renovation, we modernized a lot of the systems, like electrical and plumbing, but there are still sections which are original to the building. We try our very best to keep everything in working order. In regards to the interior looking tired, we are actually working with a designer to come up with a final "look" for our upcoming renovation. Although we will always keep the same general style, we are looking at some fresh ideas that will make our building somewhat "younger". As of now, it all still in early stages, but we are getting excited about what the future holds. Lastly to address your comment about no off street parking, we are located in an urban area, and we do offer paid parking in our parking lot. We charge just $10 for overnight parking. I hope that this was explained to you. Judging by the high rating you gave us, I am hoping that you did enjoy your stay and hope that you will come back and stay with us again in the future. This is the second time I stayed in MEI. It's a charming hotel situated in a convenient neighbourhood of Evanston. Easy walk to the train station and many fine restaurants around. Hotel however definitely need to put in some money for maintenance and upgrade. The room I stayed in this time smells like popcorn which I think it's due to stale carpet. Breakfast is minimal but coffee and tea is served throughout the day. Staffs are friendly and helpful.

Historic property was nice but maybe too many creepy photos hanging around all over. Room was very small but ok. The most disappointing was an awful mattress with a huge gully in the middle of it. You don’t expect that in any hotel! We had reserved for two nights but checked out early for our second night. The staff was courteous and refunded the second night, but didn’t offer any type of discount or reimbursement for our first sleepless night...or act surprised. We will let the management know was all that was said. It was not a cheap hotel, we sadly would not recommend at all.

Charming Historic in Great Location
Lovely historic hotel right in downtown Evanston. Close to a lot of restaurants and activities. Plenty of historic character and chatm but combined with modern amenities.

I think I may remember you and also think I remember who you are referring to in your comments. I want to assure you that the Guest Service Agent in question is 100% committed to the satisfaction of our guests. He has been with us for quite some time, whereas I just recently joined the Margarita Inn. I am creating new guidelines for our staff, that give them a lot more freedom to take care of our guests. I was glad I was there to help you out, but am sad that you did not thoroughly enjoy your experience with us. Operating a hotel in an almost 100 year old building, is so much fun, but at times also challenging as far as keeping everything in tip top shape. We try our very best, and if you read our online reviews, we succeed most of the time to wow our guests. Hopefully you will come back and stay with us again in the future, so you can see that we can and will provide you with an outstanding experience! We all look forward to welcoming you back! Wonderful, well located inn.
Our stay was excellent. The inn is located Central to great restaurants and Northwestern University. We stayed here while settling our daughter into her housing and walked everywhere easily. Our only complaint is that while the breakfast is a great spread of lovely food in a beautiful room, the coffee is very strong and barely warm. This was both days we stayed there. Otherwise a very lovely place to stay.

I am so glad you enjoyed your stay and especially the pastries and croissants prepared by our French Chef Philippe! I will let him and Vicente know how much you enjoyed the breakfast! In regards to the coffee, especially if you are at the breakfast earlier in the morning, chances are that you have had a coffee prepared by our Night Auditor, she tends to make it a bit strong. I will talk to her and ask her to tone it down a bit, so that all guests can enjoy it. Our coffee beans are proudly made by a local roaster based in Evanston. His coffee is really fantastic, but I certainly understand that if it is too strong and not hot, that it is not enjoyable. Next time you come, we will have a nice, hot cup of Joe for you in the morning. We all look forward to welcoming you back with open arms! Back in time
I loved the historic nature of the hotel from the 1940's music during breakfast to riding a working elevator from 1927. Thanks for a unique stay.
