“A rare find”

We wanted to get out of the city to fresh air and a taste of the real Thailand, and Golden Cupids turned out to be an excellent choice. This small, quiet, family-run resort is a good base for exploring the area around Chiang Mai, and was the highlight of our recent Thailand trip. The owner, Peppe, is a wonderful, kind, vivacious woman who treats her guests like family. That is the real secret to why people keep coming back to Golden Cupids. Also, the food is good and inexpensive; laundry too is inexpensive; there is a nice pool; there is free Wifi; you can take a cooking course with Peppe herself; and she can advise you about and help arrange all the usual sightseeing stuff as well as car service to the city or airport. We'll be back. Thank you again, Peppe and family.

“Rustig familiehotel aan de rand van Chiang Mai”

Dit hotel wordt gerund door Peppe en haar dochters. Het ligt op een 15 minuten van Chiang Mai stad. Als je niet zozeer in het centrum wil verblijven is dit hotel zeker een aanrader. Grote kamers met alle comfort wat je nodig hebt: een grote badkamer, goed functionerende airconditioning en goed onderhouden zwembad in mooie tuin. Neem je de nachttrein vanuit Bangkok wat een goedkope en relaxte manier is van reizen, bel bij aankomst het hotel en Peppe zal je met alle plezier ophalen. Taxichauffeurs proberen je in de maling te nemen door te zeggen dat het hotel heel ver weg is en vragen ridicule prijzen.

Area recommendations

Er worden in de buurt allerlei package tours aangeboden: schilderende en voetballende olifanten, tijgerpark, trekking, rafting etc. Als dit iets té toeristisch is voor je smaak kan je bijvoorbeeld naar Doi Inthanon, de hoogste berg in Thailand gelegen in een mooi natuurreservaat, met groene valleien, rijstvelden en watervallen. Het is makkelijk om hiervoor een prive-taxi te regelen zodat je kan stoppen waar je wil, anders ben je steeds op het openbaar vervoer aangewezen en kost het je veel tijd. Voor een taxi voor de hele dag betaal je 50 euro dus dat valt nog wel mee. Chiang Mai zelf is een leuke kleine stad en als je op een zondag kan daar zijn zou dat zeker de moeite zijn want dan is er de street market wat zeker de moeite waard is.

Traveller's tip

Nachttrein vanuit Bangkok is zeker een aanrader, je doet er 12 uur over en 2de klasse met zitplaatsen is prima en heeft AC. Je krijgt zelfs avondeten en een klein ontbijt, niet teveel van voorstellen maar wel attent. In het station heb je trouwens eetgelegenheden te over. Bel bij aankomst in Chiang Mai het guesthouse of hotel waar je verblijft, ze komen je graag ophalen en laat je niet door taxichauffeurs ompraten. Zelfs het tourist information point is een beetje dubieus want zij vertelden ons dat het hotel heel ver weg is en ongeveer 700 bath zou gaan kosten, dus beetje
