“Beautiful old house, full of character.”
We arrived fairly late and had to wait a while to check in, but the receptionist was most apologetic and processed our booking quickly.
We had room 301 in the original building, which was quite close to reception. It had a fantastic four poster bed in it and felt very atmospheric with high cealings and comfy, well-stuffed chairs. The on-suit was a little tired but very clean and looked stunning having been tiled in dark green and white and using traditional fittings. The furnishings in the main room were very "country manor" with wonderful heavy curtains across the windows, which looked out on the back gardens.
We ate in the Bistro and enjoyed a well cooked and well presented meal. The staff were very friendly and helpful at all times and breakfast the following morning (also in the Bistro) was lovely, having both full English and Continental options.
The only downside was the noise from the wedding party which went on quite late into the night and we were woken up several times by drunken party-goers returning to their rooms, but I suspect if you were staying in the modern extension, (which includes the Spa & Bistro) this wouldn't be such an issue.
The extension is not pretty from the outside but you don't notice it from the front of the building, which is charming and set in beautiful grounds.
However, the good very much outweighed the bad and we would happily return, but early enough in the day to make use of the leisure facilities! Our fault!
Easy to find off of M6.
