Cascading into a blue pool and surrounded by lush trees, this waterfall is one of South Korea’s most popular attractions.

At 72 feet (22 meters) high and 39 feet (12 meters) wide, Cheonjiyeon Waterfall is a spectacular natural wonder of Jeju Island. It tumbles over a rock cliff framed by rare plants and trees. Stand at dedicated viewing areas made from large rocks to get exceptional photos.

The cascades appear to fall magically from the sky, leading to the name, which translates to “sky connected with land.” Though the size of the falls depends on the rain, water finds its way over these cliffs year round and flows more heavily after heavy rain. Both the falls and the forest are designated natural monuments of Korea.

Take an easy stroll along a landscaped path to reach the rocky viewing platforms. The beautiful forest surrounding the falls acts as a picturesque backdrop for walking and photos. Look around to spot red-leaved Elaeocarpus trees, brambles and camellias among the green foliage. On the ground, you may see small stone stacks that represent a prayer tradition in South Korea.

Gaze into the clear pond to look for colorful koi and various other freshwater fish. You might be lucky enough to spot a giant mottled eel after dark. The pool looks inviting enough for a swim, but these waters are for the resident marine creatures only.

Search for hidden faces and other shapes among the illuminated rock formations, especially if you’re traveling with kids. Though Cheonjiyeon Waterfall is stunning during the day, it’s also popular to visit after the sun sets. Romantic lights create the ideal atmosphere for couples. This lighting also makes it easier to spot the nocturnal eels.

Set aside at least an hour or two to visit this year-round attraction, which is open daily. The walk to the waterfall is quick, but most visitors stay for a while to admire it. Getting here is a simple bus or taxi trip from Seogwipo. There is a small admission fee to enter. Once here, you’ll find restrooms and a convenience store for snacks. You’ll leave with memorable photos of one of Jeju Island’s most famous natural wonders.
