“Great location.”
The only downside of my stay was there was no fridge in the room. Best parts of my stay was extremely comfortable bedding, great location and hospitable hotel staff.
“Disappointed”
My husband and I stayed at the Francis Marion for vacation this week and I was excited to stay on King at a nice hotel. What we got was quite different. The room could use some work, batrooms were incredibly small, and the sheets on the bed were the roughest, most uncomfortable sheets I've ever experienced in a hotel. In addition, the workout facility was abysmal. Maybe we got a bad room, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. And if you're there while the Occupy protesters are still out, they camp out in the park across the street and scream until the noise ordinance kicks in.
“Beautiful historic building in a good location.”
We traveled to Charleston with our three young children and the Francis Marion was a great choice for our one-night stay. I loved the mixture of the historic features of the building with the modern touches you would find at any other mid-upscale hotel. The staff was pleasant and accommodating. Would definately return, perhaps for a romantic weekend away. Also, the location of the Hotel was great if you want to do a walking tour of downtown.
“This Hotel lives on Past Glory”
The Francis Marion was once a grand ole lady but no more. The "renovations" to this old hotel are minimal. The first room we were assigned had a bathroom barely larger than a closet -- one sink, one toilet, and an old bathtub with shower. When we complained, we were moved to a room with a "larger" bathroom. Still one sink and an old bathtub with shower. The 2nd bathroom also had washcloths that had been left by earlier guests that housekeeping apparently had not noticed. Dirt was visible on windowsills, wall plates -- this would never pass the white-glove test. What else was missing: no bathrobes or slippers, no padded hangers. We had to request shower caps. The big plus: the beds were luxuriously comfortable but the pillows lumpy. In spite of it all, the staff at Francis Marion were great -- friendly and accomodating (although front desk didn't stretch too much in finding us a "better" room for a hotel that was not full). There are too many good hotels for this one to be on our list again.
“Francis Marion Hotel”
Smallest bathroom I've ever seen. Bathroom needs an exhaust fan. Since I stayed six nights, I would have liked a small refrigerator, but I'm sure the decision was to keep the room as "historic" as possible, and thus the modern amenities we take for granted were not there. For folks who really like the history and the feel of a "B&B" this hotel would be well suited. The beds were AWESOME! The daily cleaning service was also terrific. Did not know about nightly parking fee, which would have been nice to know in advance.
“I would stay here again.”
I was celebrating my first anniversary and the hotel was awesome. They upgraded our room to the penthouse and the concierge made our stay wonderful by arranging great site seeing trips then surprised us with chocolate dipped strawberries. Overall it was a great hotel and staff that made my anniversary very special.
“Gracious and charming”
Very helpful and professional staff and all you can eat breakfasts that set you up for the day. Unfortunately having walked all over Charleston for two days, the mattress on our bed was not very forgiving... a little more comfort would have been much appreciated. This being a Deluxe Room with King Size bed.
“Smallest Bathrooms in the World”
I had a deluxe room at the hotel and it had a really small bathroom. I understand that it is a historic hotel, but for the price, I would pick some place else. It is convenient to a lot of things downtown, and I survived the small bath room, but not my first choice. The HVAC is right next to the bed so I had to place some pillows over it so I wouldn't dry up like a raisin in the morning. There is also old paint peeling off a large portion of the ceiling. It's do-able, but not recommend as a first choice.
“jersey girls visit charleston”
on our girls' getaway to charleston for the first time we found the francis marion a friendly, comfortable, convenient place to stay. the staff couldn't do enough for us and we were close to the fashion district and great restaurants. looking forward to a future visit and stay at the francis marion. we highly recommend this hotel.
“Very nice hotel and great staff”
The hotel was very nice and in a great location for walking Charleston. Staff was very helpful. Joy the concierge was great. She set up flowers for my wife while we were at dinner which was a very nice touch.
