“Super B&B”

We first stayed here 15 years ago. The room is still as comfortable, the service as excellent, and the biscuit with hot sherried fruit as delicious!

“Pleasant surprise!”

I have to thank Elizabeth for all her help while we were there. She was at the front desk the whole time we were there and went above & beyond the call of duty each time we asked her anything! Keep her around! The rooms were lovely and comfortable. Breakfast was served in our room both days and was delicious!(and hot!) We could also have eaten in the courtyard, which was lovely, but it was nice not having to be ready so early and it was rainy while we were there. The only negative was no elevator. We were on 2nd floor which wasn't bad, but 2 tired 60+ old women had a hard time. I guess that would take away some of the charm.

Historic area was all I experienced. It was lovely.

“Southern hospitality”

The John Rutledge House Inn was everything I expected and more. Friendly, competent service; comfortable, charming accommodations; an innkeeper who knows how to make everyone feel at home; great breakfasts - the chef even came to our table to give me detailed instructions on how to prepare grits! One evening, after a long day of sightseeing, the concierge graciously accommodated my desire for a pot of tea, even though it was "after hours." The concierges also made dinner reservations for us, and their restaurant recommendations were terrific. The Inn is centrally located in the historic district, and we were able to walk to virtually everything.

Area recommendations
The neighborhood we stayed in is the Historic District. I strongly recommend it - for its beauty, convenience to sites and restaurants, and for its charm.
When to go
Early April was a wonderful time to be in Charleston. It was warm, but not humid, with a breeze during the day and cool evenings. Just lovely!

“Wonderful and Romantic in Charleston”

This rehabbed mansion makes you feel like the 19th century south - warm and hospitable. The room we stayed in was contemporary and really comfortable. Enjoy the Tempurpedic mattresses. Short walk to where everything is happening. And Charleston is great!

Traveller's tip
Try Lea Forchette, a great French restaurant at 432 King Street. A fairly long walk, but doable; or take a pedi-cab.

“Great historic inn”

The John Rutledge Inn was just what we hoped to find. It's in a perfect location in the historic district and it has a history of its own, being the former home of one of the signers of the Constitution. It has lots of attractions - museum houses, restaurants, the market, the harbor - within walking distance. And the innkeeper and staff couldn't have been nicer. The breakfast was excellent, especially the fancy French toast.

Traveller's tip
See the house museums in Charleston. The Aiken-Rhett is being preserved and has been left as found. The Calhoun Mansion is an unbelievable (and I mean it), restored Victorian. The Nathaniel Russell and Edmondston-Alston were also very good. We walked to them all, although the Aiken-Rhett is a hike from the JRI.
