“Hard to find, but worth the hunt”

This place is extremely difficult to find, especially at night. The main "house" reception was gated closed. We finally went to a nearby restaurant, and one of the employees actually drove their car (we followed) back to the closed gated area and then to the "Il Borgello", which is the hotel some distance away. Our GPS indicated it was on an unmarked road. We couldn't have been more thankful to those that helped us find the place. We arrived late on the Sunday evening after Christmas. Our reservations were all in order, and we were shown our room. The accommodations are fine, though the shower is rather small. Clean. NO INTERNET AND NO PHONE, which we kind of liked. Breakfast is typical, except the marmalades were made on site. We did not have dinner during our stay though it looked inviting. This place was quiet, out of the way and placed in very spectacular surroundings. Catania airport is 60 minutes away with a toll of 1.30. Toarmina is 40 minutes away Syracuse about two hours. We also made it to Agrigento and Selinunte, which were around 4 hours each way. We found the hotel to be just what we needed after long touring days. If you have the time you can check out the Alcantera Gorge, about two miles away. There isn't much in the area surrounding the hotel, but assuming you drove, there are a couple of towns on the way that have a grocery store and some interesting restaurants. The main North - South Hwy is about 20 - 25 minutes away.

“Awesome atmosphere, away from the city.... a little too far”

The small hotel is very nice, friendly staff, beautiful location. Nice breakfast, quiet rooms, awesome bathroom. HOWEVER, it is too far away from the main city or anywhere you would need to be. When you book it it says it is only 2 miles to the main city... it is all alone in the hill, with it hard to get taxis up there, buses wont....I would love this place if it was closer. Its more for a quiet couple looking to remain alone or quietly enjoy the scenery. I stayed one night then went to another place just because of the location.

“Total Peace and Quiet”

This isnt actually one hotel - it is a series of small farmhouses each with 10 - 20 rooms. Finding it is difficult. Before you go to hotel you have to visit the Gole Alcantara visitor centre and shop, ask at the till and they will let you know which hotel you have been allocated in. They will then give you directions of how to get there (all of them are basically within 1 or 2 km's along the same road and well signposted). Our stay was amazing, the staff were so friendly and the hotel was so peaceful and quiet with amazing views. Food was good but breakfast was very basic - I would recommend going room only and getting breakfast very cheaply at one of the local cafes. I would definatly go back - but you need a car to get there!

“Good for B&B but not not for dinner”

There are three agro-touristic hotels at Gola Alcantara: we stayed at Il Borgo which is in an excellent and quiet position with great views over the valley and a lovely pool. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the staff were welcoming and helpful. The dinning room is lovely: warm and welcoming in autumn and (I imagine) cool in summer. The breakfast was fine - through we would have liked some fresh fruit. Dinner however is a different thing. You have to decide in the morning whether you are going to eat there in the evening, there's no choice of menu, a local Italian pop music station is inflicted on dinners and (on the two occasions we ate there), while the antipasta and primo were OK, the secondo was awful! What a pity they dont hire a good chef and offer a proper menu. Out of season there are no other restaurants in the area (except on Saturdays when the odd pizzeria opens): really you have to go to Giardini-Naxos or Taormina - a 20 minute drive away.

“Shame About the Breakfast”

Comfortable and friendly small hotel in a delightful location. Convenient for coast, Taormina (if you must) and Etna vicinity. Views, pool and country atmosphere. Also good value, although the claim to provide full breakfast is not justified; barely a continental breakfast and very disappointing - certainly not something to set you up for a day's exploring.

“Rustic Splendour”

Hotel was wonderful, apart from some hitches. Firstly the hotel is called 'Il Boggo', not that as stated and trying to find it in the middle of the night proved to be difficult! Secondly our luggage failed to arrive with us and the hotel staff were not as helpful as hoped. Otherwise an excellent hotel with excellent facillities and pleaseing ambience, situated in a beautiful setting. But you definitely need a car!

“Very comfortable, authentic Sicilian feel.”

Attractive old building developed tastefully into a comfortable hotel. Lovely location and very pleasant terrace and pool overlooked by mountains. Attentive staff but little English spoken; we found this charming. Would benefit from some information in English about local attractions and facilities.

“Gole Alcantara in April 2007”

A beautiful location with comfortable rooms and very reasonably priced, high-quality food (all produced locally). The staff did their best to be friendly - however, their English was very limited so that when my Italian-speaking partner wasn't around, it was very difficult to make ourselves understood. This resort is actually a complex of four hotels so if we were to consider going again in the future, it would be useful to know which hotel we were going to at the time of booking. Although there were minibars in the rooms, they were actually empty, but perhaps these are filled for high season? Take care going round the many trecherous hairpin bends you meet on the way to the complex!

“Warm welcome”

We spend some time going up and down Via Nazionale trying to find a Hotel called Motta Camastra, when this is the name of the village. Never mind,we finally spotted one of the buildings pictured in the website and they direct us to "La Casa de le Monache". The experience was overall very good, mainly due to the friendly and attentive staff. The room was clean and nicely decorated, with a lovely balcony, but for 3 days the air conditioning wasn't working. The food was authentic and the house wine very good. The dinner alfresco a winner.
