Hotel has a secluded residential location with rooms that overlook the mountains and beautiful lake area (several blocks away). Perfect quiet location to rest and read a book. Restaurant serves good breakfast only, must walk or drive to other food establishments. Hotel had bicycles available for guests. Staff worked exceptionally hard to make the visit pleasant. Morning taxi was slow coming for trip to train station. Internet only worked in the lobby area. As a location for secluded rest, this would be a good choice.

This is my second stay in Esplanade. Loved it so much that I could stay every season one week to taste the nature in Locarno. Located over the hills surrounded by trees with a look of classical and forever the best look of its natural way. I would advise anytime to spend some special time for yourselves,,
Great place to stay just a few minutes to by foot from the Locarno train station.
I suggest if arriving by train use the bus for transfer, will stop right in front of the Hotel.
(I think it was # 1, get off at stazione sociale or just ask the bus driver, runs every 15 min.)
If you are without luggage it's an easy stroll to Locarno, old part of town or lake promenade.
The Hotel is very clean ( recently renovated ), staff extremly friendly ask for ideas on what to do. Rooms comfortable not very big for north american standards but was no issue for me. Breakfast simple but all you really need to get going in the morning .(unless you need your eggs & bacon...) Must see : Madonna del Sasso perched on a rock above Locarno , easy to get by funiculare or by foot. (steep climb but well worth the effort) The church is under renovation but still open to visit , amazing frescoes inside the church!

This was my third visit to the Ramada Hotel La Palma, this time for six nights - the previous visits were for one night only. Once again I can thoroughly recommend this hotel. A huge bonus is the location, for these reasons;
The hotel is only a short walk (five to ten minutes) from the railway station. Once you are settled in, using the rear entrance through the car park is the most direct route to the station.
The hotel is situated on a quiet road, immediately adjacent to the lakeside.
The main town centre (Locarno Piazza Grande) is no more than ten minutes walk away.
The boat stop is no more than five minutes walk away.
I found the staff on reception at check in/out to be very friendly and helpful - and they spoke excellent English. Breakfast staff were also friendly and eating breakfast outside on the terrace in the fresh morning air was lovely. My room was at the rear of the hotel (not on the lake side - but this was no surprise as I knew I was paying a lower than average price) - even so there are pleasant views up to the hills at the rear of the town. The room was spacious, clean and quiet..
In summary I think this hotel is a super base for a holiday in the Ticino region. On a couple of days I took the train to Lugano - about 1 hour, and one change, from Locarno - it was very easy. I would be very happy to stay here again.

I booked this hotel at short notice, having found that all other hotels in the town were very expensive due to a pop festival in the main square. The hotel is uphill from the station, and can be walked to in about 12 minutes - although it is possible to get a bus if needs be (bus line 2 I think). However the slightly elevated position is worth it for the superb view over Locarno and the lake - you can actually see "round the corner" of the lake towards Italy, which you do not see from the town itself. I was given a friendly welcome and a glass of mineral water on arrival, which was welcome on a very hot day.
Now, the hotel itself is slightly unusual, being annexed to a residence for nuns. However, the hotel part is run exactly as you would expect any three star hotel. The room had TV, wifi, hair drier, safe, bathroom etc. The room was quite small but had a balcony of almost equal floor space, with a really spectacular view down to Locarno and Lake Maggiore. I would also note that everything was spotlessly clean. I read a review elsewhere on the internet which suggested that the main entrance to the hotel is locked at ten p.m. - I can confirm that this is not (or no longer, if it ever was) the case; the room key has a fob (like a car remote) which opens the house door.
So, an unusual set-up to the hotel which create a rather odd ambiance, but if you need a place to stay in Locarno then it is absolutely fine.

I was a bit unsure about the Garni Montaldi, but the hotel is located not 2 mins away from the station and double-glazing make sure the room remains quiet. The hotel itself is a bit old, and rough around the edges, but the rooms are big and perfectly clean, so you have to take the good with the not-so-good. Helpful staff; free Wi-Fi.
