It is in the middle of every things. Not expensive- spend your money to eat all those good food in the area and drink (five 8 oz beer in the ice bucket for 3 Euros) The hostel is clean and the rooms are large enough. Bathroom is very clean and shower is great. Other hotels you pay for the lobby. Very friendly staff even their English is not perfect, they will help you some how. It was better than 3-star hotel in the area that I stayed before.

Minimal effort on the part of local staff to maintain the place, although overall condition was acceptable.
Kitchen had all but one light burned out, despite two requests to have the burned out bulbs replaced, no replacement was done. Mirror in bathroom cracked, numerous loose tiles in stairwell landings (dangerous if not paying attention), and most important, front gate lock to the building had been entirely removed at some point so security was minimal.
Wireless would lock up in the middle of the night, and when it was working, it was just barely usable-- good luck making a Skype call if more than one person was actively using it.
Only one bathroom for an apartment capable of sleeping so many people was also a drag, but that part is clearly stated when booking. The tiny water heater (apparently typical of Spanish homes) capable of only one person's worth of hot water was quite a (disappointing) surprise, though.
That said, apartment was large and spacious and quite comfortable, excellent location above Puerta del Sol, excellent noise insulation, and that made up for a lot.
I traveled alone to Madrid for the first time and stayed 4 nights. You are literally in the heart of puerta del sol without the noise. I was on the 3rd floor and faced away from the square so the only noises I heard were from neighbors going in and out. The A/C worked perfectly considering it was end of October and still quite warm. The metro is right on the plaza as well. The single room was quite large. I highly recommend it, most people were a little older so not to loud at night. Of course Madrid is for late night Paseos so people coming in late hours is to be expected.
I had such a good experience at this hotel, a very pleasant stay. It is very basic; the rooms are small, the breakfast quite meagre and my view was of washing in a courtyard. However it is a bargain, especially when you consider the location. It is very clean and surprisingly quiet. Plus the staff are most helpful, yet not obtrusive at all. If you want to enjoy Madrid and simply want somewhere clean and secure to lay your head at night (or in the wee hours of the morning) This hotel would be your perfect choice.
(Room for 4 people).
Positives: The area is really nice and there's a MacDonalds for a quick breakfast or coffee if you want (it comes in handy). There's an Orange phone carrier store in the plaza outside so you can get what you need for your cellphone. Apartment is clean. Room size is ok but by North American standards small.
Negatives: The guy we met didn't speak any Spanish and there is no lobby. you have to call the hotel and meet them once you get there. The apartment is fine but the shower is tiny. If you are taller than 6 feet you will hit the ceiling. Kitchenette is very small.
Ideal for up to 2 weeks. Room for 6 will be better choice for 4 people. The rooms for 4 is just one room with a bed, couch bed, coffee table, tv and unit, and a wardrobe. Overall a 6
Was very happy with my stay at Hostal El Pilar - it is very close to the Sol metro station and is within walking distance of all the main attractions in Madrid. It was a great place to base myself for my short stay in Madrid and I was very happy with the hotel. The staff don't speak much English but were pleasant, and the wifi sometimes didn't work very well, but the room was cleaned every day and the hotel is very secure. Would definitely recommend and would stay again!
