Really friendly and helpful staff, very comfortable mattresses, sea view is amazing, great sauna, pool and jacuzzi facilities. Sea is a bit rough, but very worthwhile. Salt water pool for the less adventurous. Great hotel if you rent a car to see the island (recommended anyway).

I chose this hotel because I have had wonderful holidays staying in other Vila Galé hotels and this was no exception. The staff here are friendly, professional, helpful and are impressively accomplished in several languages. Nothing was too much trouble for any of them and I had a relaxing and enjoyable stay. My room was clean, comfy and well equipped, and had a good view of the sea (and the changing weather). The restaurant provided an excellent service and I thoroughly recommend the a la carte option in the evenings. I'm so glad I didn't miss the evening when typical Madeiran food was served, and traditional entertainment laid on.
We liked this hotel as it is in a quiet spot, located on the cliffs in the village of Canico de Baixo, which is a short drive from the capital, Funchal. The hotel has a free bus going to Funchal 3 times a day, which was great, but the local buses also had a fairly regular timetable. Although it was February, it was warm enough to sit out on a sunbed on one of the many areas cut into the rocks. We were able to use the facilities of the hotel next door, which had an indoor pool and gym.The breakfast each morning was more than adequate, and the many options varied from day to day. The reception staff were very knowledgable about the island, and were able to book trips for you.
Our stay in March was spent at this excellent hotel, staff were friendly and courteous ,food was of a very high standard and as we used the buffet rather than A La Carte there was always more than enough choice and quantity. We booked a 'side sea view studio' but were given a central studio with direct views over the pool and gardens of the sea, it comprised 3 rooms, a large comfortable lounge large bedroom and sizeable bathroom with a kitchen diner in the lounge area. The gardens require special note as they are so beautiful and well kept, the overall design of the hotel kept the buildings integrated with the gardens to give pleasant and unspoilt garden. We would recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to visit Madiera. There is a bus stop 100 yards from the hotel where a 2.2euro ride to Funchal can be taken about every 45mins.

The hotel is nice, very basic, rooms are clean. Staff was really nice and helpful. Breakfast was a bit boring. The garden and the pools are beautiful with many flowers, plants and with sea view. The building itself is old and you can hear every single noise from the other rooms. Many restaurants, cafes and shops are around, easy to get to Funchal even on bus. We enjoyed to stay there.
We were met at reception and shown to our room by the Manager who told us we had been upgraded, all rooms face the sea but we had a first floor room which felt more private. It was very quiet at the hotel and although it is next to the airport,as other reviews stated,we were not disturbed by the planes. As it was our Wedding Anniversary, when we arrived back to our room we found a bottle of champagne courtesy of the Manager and Staff which was lovely. Our anniversary dinner,we had in the restaurant which was great food, but only one other table dining which turned out to be the owner of the hotel!Breakfast was good, mainly continental style but the chef would cook any style of eggs or omelettes, very good! On Valentines day there was an orchid left for my wife, lovely gesture. We wanted a quiet and relaxing holiday, which we got along with extremely pleasant staff, from the Managers to the cleaning ladies. We will definitely visit again.
Modern, clean, friendly.
The Continental Breakfast pretty good for a small hotel.
I ordered the Full English but was a bit disappointed with the fact that the sausages were actually those tinned hot-dog sausages. Not the greasy spoon heart attack food I was hoping for.
I have stayed here twice. It is in the centre of "town"
The walks and scenery are excellent around Machico, but that is the case all over Madeira.
It has an imported sandy beach.

We got off to a bad start as the taxi driver at the airport didn't have a clue where our hotel was and got hopelessly lost before asking some locals for directions, and charging us the full amount for his mistake! The hotel more than made up for it though... the location is pleasantly tucked away in the verdant, leafy hills of Santo da Sara a small quiet village a few Kilometres away from Funchal. Our room was one of four in an out building just a few yards up the hill from the main hotel and restaurant. The room was basic but clean and comfortable, with great views of the mountains in front. Staff were more than helpful and were forthcoming in giving travel advice and directions as well as general hotel hospitality. Restaurant seemed a bit pricey (evening meal) but the food was very good. I would definitely recommend this as a quiet holiday stay.
"Only noise was the roar of the sea - great for us!"
We arrived well before official check in time, but this was not a problem we were shown straight to our room by a very welcoming friendly member of staff, to find we had been upgraded from a sea view studio room to the top floor apartment with separate living room, bedroom bathroom and toilet with a huge balcony overlooking the sea with room for sun lounger, table and chairs. Wow!
'The Cais', the Rocamar and the Royal Orchid are now under the same ownership so the facilities of all hotels were open to us, pools spa, gym etc. I had considered all the hotels as options when I booked 'The Tropical' (now 'Cais de Olivera') Having explored all, It was the quieter of the 3, less 'hotelly' no music in the smaller pool area as opposed to that coming from the Royal Orchid gym, I was pleased with my choice it suited us best. They have begun refurbishment but we were undisturbed by noise - it will be closing in Feb 2014 to complete and reopening in March with a new updated look, so comments I saw written in reviews about the hotel being 'tired' will no longer apply. Had excellent meal at the Lee Hamilton Restaurant (onsite) on my birthday very attentive friendly staff.
A popular resort area, Caniço is on the southeastern coast of Madeira, a short drive from the capital city of Funchal. The clear waters of nearby Garajau Marine Park attract scuba divers, who are likely to see Atlantic manta rays and large fish species such as groupers. Several top-ranked golf courses are also within easy reach.
