“Blew us out of the water”

This resort is AMAZING - you MUST stay here. END OF STORY. The rooms are beautiful, the resort has unlimited activities, the food is amazing, the drinks are awesome and constantly keep coming. every single employee will say hello to you and will offer to take a picture for you. they will make sure you have everything you need and follow up on any requests you may have. we stayed for 6 nights, 7 days and left the resort once to snorkel, we had no reason to leave! We stayed at the Paradisus Reserve in Punta Cana and this resort blew it out of the water! If you dont stay here you are def. making a mistake!

“Good overall, but they need to address some issues”

Stay: 11-26 - 12-4 for 20th anniversary. 5 stars: Request for quiet bldg & king bed granted. Cold towel & champagne upon arrival. Beautiful room - Jacuzzi access from inside & outside. Bed firm - pillow menu & bed topper avail. Huge shower. Beautiful tile work throughout room. Outdoor bed on balcony. Butler food closet & combination safe. Great activity directors. Most employees work hard to ensure you have a great time. Beach is cleaned often. Beautiful grounds. Large menu & great services at Spa. 4 stars: Food very good for an AI - 9 restaurants - we liked everything but Barcelona. Never waited for table, but we ate early. Most top shelf liquors upon request. Michael Jackson show was good. Fun theme nights brought guests together. 3 stars: lazy river pools aren't heated - only main & Excellence club pools (slightly) but all were clean. Smoke from next door balcony was bad. They should use a tablecloth for room service on balcony or clean the outside tables first as they naturally get dirty. 2 stars: Room service menu says lunch starts at 11:30. Called at 11 to request lunch before 12PM check out but they never came as promised. 1 star: Elevator in bldg 1 worked 1 out of 10 days. Kept telling us it would be fixed the next day - unacceptable for 5 star resort. One bathroom sink was cracked in many places as was the glass toiletry tray - we reported it. We tipped well accordingly. Good overall, had lots of fun, but might try a different resort next time.

Area recommendations

Day trip to Isla Mujeres is easy via convenient 20 minute ferry, which is 5 minutes from resort. Golf cart rental available on the island, but you must bring your driver's license. Island is small but beautiful & there is snorkling, sea turtle sanctuary and lots of restaurants, bars & shopping - some nice B&B's. You could see it all in less than a day. If you want to see Tulum, Xel-Ha or anything farther south you could take a taxi or a shuttle but it is much farther and adds significantly to your day.

When to go

Best time is probably April. After that it starts to get very hot. October is the rainiest month (hurricane peak season too). We went in late Nov. and the weather was beautiful but very breezy & the non-heated pools were already getting too cold.

Getting there

Customs at the Cancun airport is busiest on weekends. There are timeshare sales people all over that will try to pull you away to hear their presentation. We avoided them and walked straight outside to find our driver. On a busy Friday afternoon it took 40 minutes to get to the resort, but we had arranged for private transportation. It may take longer if you have a shared ride as you may have to stop at other resorts to drop off other guests.

Getting around

The resort is well laid out and not so big that you can't walk everywhere. Paths are well and beautifully lit at night and if you can't find something just ask. We did and someone actually walked us all the way to our destination. Restaurants are centrally located, most indoors, two outdoors. There is only one ladies room and one men's room outside - after a few drinks you'll wish there were more and that they were closer, but they are both clean.

What to pack

Men need long pants, closed toe shoes and shirts with short or long sleeves with collars for all indoor restaurants at night. Polo shirts are fine too. Women's dress code is more lax, but most wore sundresses & sandals. Take several swimsuits. Humidity keeps things from drying well, so we brought a small laundry detergent to wash out anything that took on a musty smell. Beach cover-ups are fine for lunch restaurants as are flipflops. You can tip in pesos or dollars, we brought lots of singles to tip. Bring lots of sunscreen and mosquito spray (more than you think you'll need) as it is expensive to purchase at the gift shop. The toiletries were fine in the standard room & are upgraded in the Excellence club. They have a hairdryer in the room. They have a very nice gym so pack workout clothes if you think you'll use it and the tennis courts require appropriate dress - keep in mind they do not allow black rubber soles the court and you cannot wear sandals or flipflops on the bike tour.

Shopping

The resort has several gift shops: jewelry, perfume and a souvenier shop that sells clothes, toiletries and some pharmacy items. As with most resorts, gift shop items are pricey.

Dining

With 9 restaurants there is something for everyone but indidual tastes and preferences will be your own deciding factors. The fanciest one is the French Restaurant, Chez Isabelle, with good food and the availability of a private dining experience (extra cost). Agave is the beautiful open-air (and indoor) Mexican restaurant and has Tex-Mex options as well as traditional and great flaming Mayan coffee. Toscana is the Italian restaurant with good food as well and also serves the breakfast & lunch buffet. Basmati is the newest and the chef is from India. We enjoyed the tasting menus, but an Indian couple seemed to think it less authentic for their tastes. Such is the way of most ethnic food experiences. Barcelona features Mediterranean dishes, but we found their specialty, the paella, to be very overcooked and they forgot to server our appetizers. The Lobster House (also serves a la carte breakfast) has nice seafood options, though the lobster is not the cool water lobster taste from Maine, but spiny lobster (no claw) - not bad, just different. The Grill serves steaks, cooked as requested. Both restaurants are outside and during hot months mosquitos may make this unpleasant. The Asian restaurant is Spice & they have a hibachi table (must be there by 6PM) and also a regular Asian menu. Good sushi & appetizers here as was the grouper. The Flavor Market serves tappas, but the food was hit or miss.

Nightlife

There is a small disco, Alegria, which is open at night, but this is a couples resort. Nightlife is geared more towards those that end their night before 11 PM. After the nightly shows the Cafe Kafe (outdoor bar) is also open and they have a band playing soft music for dancing or after dinner cocktails.

Events and shows

There is a different show nightly, ranging from fair to good, but the Michael Jackson tribute show was the best. They are all very talented, especially the guitar player from Argentina who was actually the warm-up act. The resort hosts several theme nights: Mexican, Caribbean, & 1001 Arabian. Buffet food was best on Mexican night and the Mariachi band was great, but all are beautifully decorated for hours before the event and the large tables of 8 give guests opportunities to mingle and get to know one another. The resort offers a tequila tasting, wine tasting and a cigar tasting at an additional cost and all are easily arranged.

Outdoors or beach

The beach is not the turquoise blue water of other Caribbean destinations, but is still lovely. Beach grass accumulates here often - no fault of the resort, but they clean it constantly both by machine and by hand. Sand is powdery soft and very comfortable to walk upon. There is beach service for drinks and they come around often. Several huts provide shade and there are many lounge chairs for sunning. Beds and huts dot the resort in different places and it's fun to explore them all, though they do fill up fast in the morning as everyone claims their favorite. If you want a particular spot you should probably get there earlier and save one, but please return to it as others could be using it if you are not. Three outdoor bars including the swim up in the main pool. Towels were usually in abundance or else they were working on getting more. Personel were always available to move a chair or set up towels whenever you needed it. There are many outdoor showers to clean off the sand and the stone turret style offers privcacy. The lazy river meanders for a while around the resort but is not heated. Lots of floats available, cute bridges to go under and walk over. Sunrise over Isla Mujeres in the distance was beautiful. The X-Lounge is a deck on the beach with beds and chairs that is open during the day and evening for relaxing with a drink or two. Resort landscaping is lush and beautiful to look at.

Other

The spa is gorgeous and offers a wide variety of options, though the beach massage is not as private as some will like. Tipping is optional, but most everyone did. We tipped for every service, but it was based on the type of service and how well that service was performed. All in all we found that the resort made attempts to resolve guest issues and to work very hard to ensure your repeat booking.

“Not my favorite place, but a great value!”

Overall this was a fantastic hotel. The rooms are great, the grounds are beautiful! Pools everywhere! We found that the staff was not exactly service oriented. Perhaps some of them didn't understand our requests, but overall the answer seemed to be "No we can't do that". Simple requests! The food was about what you expect in an all inclusive. Not great, but plentiful! The alcoholic drinks were sub-standard. Just drink lots of Corona! I'm not sure I would go back and I'm not sure I would recommend it to anyone.

“Best all inclusive hotel ever!!!!”

We had a fabulos time! We had stayed at many all inclusive resorts, this has been the best experience we have ever had! Be sure to visit the parrots, they are absolutely beautiful (please tip caretaker). The beach is beautiful and the pools are very nice. The breakfast butfet was the very enjoyable especially with the live piano music.....and anything you would want to start your day! We will try the other Excellenene resorts in the future.

“Excellence was Excellent!”

We went to Excellence the 4th week of November & it was gorgeous! Hotel is the best I ever stayed in. Staff & service was friendly, fast & professional. The white sandy beach was beautiful & the strolling waitress right on the beach was great. This definitely is a 5 star luxury hotel, but yet you feel comfortable & relaxed. My only complaint is the quality & quantity of the food. Portions are very small, except for in Basmati which was excellent. Don't worry about being safe. You have to go thru 3 gates & security guards just to get to the hotel. Hotel is secluded & private. But we also went to Market 28 in Cancun & the Mayan Ruins in Chichen Itza & felt very safe. Area recommendations

I liked Market 28 in Cancun. It was a fun & interesting experience. You got to see life off of the resort plus get some good bargains.

“Not coming back!!!”

Lets just say that the pictures looked a lot better then the hotel itself. But the ground where nice and the pools were clean. The beach was not clean, too much seaweed. The Lobster House restaurant....very slow service, I mean really slow, and by the time we got our lobster it was so small, overdone, and barely warm. We never went to that restaurant again. They probably do that so that people will be discouraged to eat their lobster, which looked so good on the photos. All of their restaurants where 3.5 starts. The foods is just not that good. But I have to say that Thanksgiving Buffet Dinner was good.
