“Romantic Turn of the Century Hotel with all the amenities”

This is an incredible hotel on top of a mountain overlooking the sea and charming villages on the Italian Riviera. The decor is old world European and the staff is gracious and warm. We were given a choice of rooms since we were there in off season and chose one with a balcony so we could enjoy the view in the evening. The bathrooms are very nice, all marble and luxurious toiletries. It has a beautiful indoor pool, spa and a small work out area for the sportif. THe breakfast is mostly rolls and jams and cold meats and cheese but...they will be happy to make you eggs and rashers of bacon if you ask and fresh cappuccino. The restaurant at night is a bit pricey but excellent continental cuisine. I had a glazed salmon fillet on au gratin potatoes and a starter of perfectly grilled veggies. There is a special shuttle to their sister hotel on the beach in Camogli and a discounted price for use of that hotel's pool overlooking the ocean or beach chairs and towel.

Area recommendations
Camogli is a quaint fishing village that has a lovely promenade and little restaurants. This is near to Portofino and Rapallo and other more upscale seaside towns that feature pleasure boats, tourist ferries, and designer shops. Also the hotel is set in a large park and you can hike to Portofino or many other beautiful villages from there on well marked paths.
When to go
We went in mid-June and it was perfect for swimming and touring and minimal crowds.
Getting there
Portofino Kulm is on a little mountain road right off of SP 1 or Via Aurelia. From the A12 motorway you need to get off either at Recco and go towards La Spezia, or get off at Rapallo and take via Aurelia towards Genoa. From Rapallo you go through a little village called S. Lorenzo, once you hit a small tunnel, the entrance to Portofino Kulm is an immediate sharp left through a white wrought iron arch with the name of hotel on it. You go up the hill for about 3 miles until you come to a gorgeous large pink and white hotel with the view over the sea. It has parking. From Recco you go on Via Aurelia almost to the end of Camogli (no turn offs), until you see the wrought iron gate. Turn right into it. If you go through the little tunnel, you have gone too far. Once you have found it, it is easy.
Getting around
You need a car.
What to pack
Bathing suit, chic casual clothes.
Must see
Portofino, San Margherita, Rapallo, Chiavari and of course Camogli. All have a different ambience. Take ferries to Portofino. In summer do Cinq Terre.
Shopping
Wonderful designer clothing, art, embroidered items, but little in cheap tourist stuff.
Dining
Expensive but wonderful. the seafood is so fresh and the pasta home-made. eat lofs of Gelato
Outdoors or beach
Be aware, the beach at Camogli is black and shale like. For sand you would need to go to Chiavari. Portofino is wonderful for strolling and climbing up to the church and the ramparts. San Margherita has some decent sunbathing with sand, but Rapallo has piers that people sunbathe on . Portofino Kulm also has wonderful hiking trails.

“PORTOFINO KULM”

“Hotel Portofino Kulm a Camogli Posizione Spettacolare”

L'hotel ci e' piaciuto molto Camera Molto piccola ma funzionalissima. Colazione standard a buffett molto curata. Personale competente e preparato Prezzo adeguato alla struttura Consigliatissimo!!

“Posizione bella, servizio terrificante...”

External structure of great charm, inner chambers of poor finishing. Beautiful location surrounded by the park of Portofino, absolutely necessary means of transport. Low-level breakfast, bad service. Front office staff is memorable for discourtesy and rudeness. To confirm this, reading in a room adjoining the reception, we listened to them while denigrate the guests. I think this staff is not suitable for a 4 star hotel. Pleasant and relaxing area reserved for swimming.
