“VERY TIRED CITY CENTRE HOTEL”
Wanted a Cambridge city centre hotel with parking for one night so had to bite the bullet as very little choice. Past reviews suggested this was a 'tired' establishment. How right they were. Scuffed furniture, broken sink plugs, scruffy bathroom and that was a 'superior' room. Bathrobes and slippers can't make up for shabby rooms. Public rooms as bad. Great difficulty obtaining a drink at lunchtime! Staff few and far between but they did try to be helpful. On the upside, reasonable parking charges for residents as far as Cambridge goes. A captive market to exploit especially at graduation time. Would only stay here at these top of the range prices if absolutely unavoidable which on this occasion it was..
“Old world charm”
Parts of the hotel may have seen better days but the staff are great and the location is very convenient.
“OK value, but less than regal”
I chose this hotel as it was one of the lower priced options close to the centre of Cambridge - within a reasonable walk from the railway station and the city centre. The room had seem better days, the holes in the carpet were the most noticeable thing. However the room were and bathroom were clean and the bed comfortable. It did face the road, which is busy until 11pm or so and from 6am in the morning so would not suit a light sleeper. Had a couple of meals in the restaurant, these were OK and not too pricey. The staff were efficient, but hard to find in the bar/restaurant in the evening. Overall it did the job without breaking the bank.
“Needs some updates and more staff.”
My room was very small; it had holes and stains in the carpet. Very dirty and worn furniture. Food service was slow in the restaurant and bar. They need more staff.
“Cambridge jewel”
had a problem with basement room. it had heating/steam pipes in the roof and it was like a sauna in room, no matter that no heat was on. air conditioning didnt work complained and they moved us n 2nd night to a different room, which was fine.
“only good location”
location is good if you are interested in the Botanical Garden or in Cambridge Judge Business School, as I was. But the hotel is noisy, the hotel looks decadent, staff tries to help (my room had bad lighting). Not a good experience.
“Great location, less great value”
The Royal Cambridge is in a great location, convenient for the colleages and other city centre attractions, as well as being only a short walk from the railway station. We had a superior room and would describe it as pleasant but tired. In that sense it's a typical British provincial hotel room. Howver, there are very few hotels in the centre of Cambridge and the prices reflect this fact.
“A pleasant experience”
A fairly typical English hotel - aging elegance. Our room was larg and convenient. The servicing of the room was good. We at in the hotel only forbreakfast and the continental breakfast was more than adequate. Because of the location of the hotel was good it respect to the centre of Cambridge, we walked whenever possible. Overall, a pleasant experience and we would certainly stay there again.
“Nice hotel in a Perfect location”
This was my second stay at this hotel. It's location is excellent with respect to the University's various colleges. My room was quiet and clean. Not a remarkable place, but quite comfortable. I will likely choose it for next time I am back to Cambridge,
“Good location, very poor hotel”
This hotel relies on a captive market given the very limited availability of hotel rooms in the city centre of Cambridge. The receptionist was discourteous on our arrival. We were not able to check-in at 13.45 so had to check-in after midnight (we were attending a wedding) and were allocated an extremely poor room, with nosiy inadequare plumbing. For the money, very disappointing.
