“Brilliant Breakfast”
An incredibly well situated hotel for seeing Cambridge Colleges and for shopping. A wonderful selection at breakfast and the staff were extremely courteous and helpful, especially the guy on reception who remembered our name 2 days later! We were a little taken aback to have to pay for parking our car, but given the compactness of the city and the lack of parking space, this was understandable.
“One night in Cambridge”
The De Vereeniging Uni Arms Hotel is a strange mix of slightly tired decor balanced with good food, excellent service and a great position. Being there for one night, the size (smallish) of the Street facing room did not really matter as the bed was very comfortable and the aircon covered any street noise. Dinner was excellent, with great service and breakfast is in a charming airy room overlooking a huge green. Again, both the food and the service were very good. A further plus is the parking under the hotel. Well worth the price, and I'll return! PG
“IFFY CAR PARKING”
OUR ROOM WAS VERY NICE, BUT SOME ARE RATHER TIRED. THE CAR PARKING IS VERY LIMITED. IN PROCESS OF RENOVATION.
“A little bit tired”
Staff were extremely helpful and friendly and the location excellent for town. The building is very tired and our room was cramped and badly maintained. The restaurant evening meal was very good but breakfast stretched resources to the limit resulting in empty dishes on the buffet and no glasses for juices etc. For the cost we expected a lot more
“Convenient location”
Hotel public areas were fine. Room was hot and air conditioning not working. Window opened onto busy street. Asked for air conditioning to be fixed but was not done. Room also smelly (damp!) - no extractor fan in en suite bathroom probably accounted for this.
“"Disappointing Decor"”
The University Arms is superbly located in the centre of Cambridge. The service on reception was professional and attentive. We had dinner included within our package, which was superb and we were served promptly and courteously. It is the bedroom that lets down this hotel. There was paint peeling from the walls, drawers missing from the furniture, a leeking bath and holes in the wall where the trouser press used to be. It was hot in the room when we first arrived and so I turned on the cooler. This was so noisy, that I decided to turn it off and open the window instead, only to find that the windows themselves were rotten and in a shocking state of dis-repair. We have stayed in various De Vere hotels that are nothing like this. It is such a shame that a beautiful building like this can be left in this state. In summary I would recommend the food in the restaurant, but steer clear of booking a room.
“Sadly not one I would recommend”
Sadly not a hotel we will go back to. For a four star hotel it was lacking in wow factor. The room was tired, although a nice size. The air conditioning in the hotel was not working, so our room hit incredible temperatures at night. The rooms at the front are subject to a fair bit of noise from the street, particularly when pubs kick out as well. Overall, not a great experience. The staff were nice if not a little powerless, and although breakfast is included - you have to pay for any hot food. There are much better four star hotels. The only benefit was the location to town. But then you pay for that with the car parking charge at £14 a day.
“Will Never Return”
Other than its lovely and convenient location, as well as a delicious breakfast I could find nothing to compliment this tired establishment. Our first room stank of smoke, something which appeared to have passed by the attention of houskeeping. The changed room was smaller with a view - and constant noise - of some kind of air-conditioning or heating unit. There was no heating in the room and it was very cold. I was offered a small electric heater but there were only 2 power sockets in the entire room so its use necessitated a choice between TV/Laptop/Internet/Hairdryer. The TV was old with only 11 channels, four of which didn't work. There were two cracked panes of glass in the windows and the furnishings were horrid. The bathroom had not been cleaned properly, as evidenced by a used flannel on the floor as well as several dark black hairs; not ours. Most of the fixtures showed mould and flaking tiles or paint. The bath had several cracks in the surface which are clearly a hygiene hazard. Toiletries were at a minimum. My many calls to Reception sometimes went unanswered or required a wait of minutes. A similarly long wait ensued when calling Reception from the Car Park to gain access. The central lift broke down and the journey from the second to our room was long, tricky to navigate and not easy with luggage. An experience I hope to never repeat or even come close to.
“Needs a refurb!”
Could be such a good hotel but paint peeling off walls and wallpaper hanging off. 1970s desk tea and coffee stained. Clean but too well worn a hotel to be comfortable. Hidden car park fee meant that I would have been better off in a more expensive hotel!
“avoid cambridge de here”
completely dated only 5 odd rooms currently refurbished, the others quit awful
