“Awful Location”

The room had to the smallest room allowed by law. The bathroom was no bigger than an airplane bathroom with a shower added. The location was horrendous. It was on the outskirts of Caen and there were zero restaurants, stores or anything near it. Since it was so far out there were no cabs (they would have been expensive to get into town anyway) and had to rely on city busses. But since the last busses ran at 9pm, there was no way to really enjoy Caen at night. Staff was very friendly and helpful, and they deserve to be working at a much better hotel than this. In fact, if I owned a hotel, I'd hire them. But the whole experience was killed by the location of the hotel and room size. Probably the first time I have felt very let down by Expedia.

Area recommendations
Absolute center/downtown of Caen.
Other
If you're doing the battlefield tours, don't bother going out of your way for the Caen Memorial. It's great for a complete history of WW2 from 1918 on but does not focus on Normandy (in fact the small room with the Normandy exhibit wasn't due to open until Feb 2012). 18 euros was a bit high. Stay in center of Caen. Definately rent a car and go to the battlefields yourself. I paid for the Caen Memorial guided tour service to Omaha, Point du Hoc and a couple of other sites and it wasn't really worth it if you already know what happened. Instead rent a car (I did on my second day) and venture out on your own. You will see much more, have no problem getting to the sites and will be able to stop at the countless miscellaneous and very cheap museums scattered around.

“Excellent Budget Hotel”

This hotel is located right on the outside of Caen. Staff was friendly, room was small by American standards, and clean. The hotel also has excellent free wifi. The breakfast was a bit expensive so we went to the local grocery store one morning and then to McDonalds the next. McDonalds is less then a mile away from the hotel. The only bad this about this hotel was that we couldn't check out until after 8:00am.

“Not impressed at all”

Booked this hotel for its closeness to the ferry port at Ouistreham, which we were using for the early morning boat to Portsmouth. The hotel was advertised with a dining room for dinner and since we had a long drive to get there, we were looking forward to a relaxing meal and straight to bed for our early departure. When we arrived we asked if it was neccessary to reserve a table for dinner, only to be told "the restaurant is closed." When we asked why we got the usual Gallic shrug with the statement "it is the end of the season." The result of this was a trawl around to find somewhere we could get dinner which was not acceptable. If the end of the season means the dining room is closed then perhaps it would be better if this hotel closed for the same length of time. Never again.

Ouistreham itself.

“Review of 9-23-09, 3-day stay”

If your interest is the D-Day Invasion Beach area, this hotel is a good choice. Rooms are small, bath very small, but functional, very good breakfast, staff helpful and generally bi-lingual. Compared to other hotel rates in area, this was a good value. Because of small bath space, if you are seriously overweigh, you won't fit. There were no fees or charges beyond initial booking on Expedia.

Traveller's tip
Avis and Hertz car rentals are across the street from the train station. Find the Tourist Info in town center, across from the Cathedral for free maps and info on Caen and area. There is a Carrefour Super market (with deli) and gas station on the round-about before the hotel roundabout. Do see the Military Museum in Bayeau. It has a complete, cronological story of the Normandy Battle, many exhibits, one of the best museums in the area.

“Good place to stay”

The on site food was a great price and well worth it. room was cleaned & bed made every day. The only let down was the bathroom, it was smaller than small. it was tiny. The staff were frienly, helpfull and bi-ligual

Traveller's tip
At the breakfast buffet make a batch for dinner as well. sneaky but saves you money.
