Paraty is paradise!!! Staying here, out of the town centre allows you to feel the peace and calm of the area. The hosts are very friendly and welcoming. They are on reception 24hrs to allow you gated access, it felt very safe. We wished we had planned to stay longer, maybe next time?! I advise you to take Deet and anti mosquito stuff, they were nippy! There were provisions in the apartment but you can never have too much Deet!!
My husband and I loved our stay at Pousada do Sandi. The property is beautifully decorated and the wonderful 300 year old architecture is something to behold. Our room was well appointed and very well maintained with a modern bathroom. The staff was extremely helpful for all of our needs. The included breakfast offered everything you could imagine - fresh fruits and juices, eggs, cheese, meats, cereals and many delicious pastries. We were there for 5 days and each day there were a couple of unique items. The grounds were lovely and the restaurant was top notch. I can't say enough good things about our experience at this charming old pousada.

"Nice, yet cheap hotel a short walk from the centre"
My girlfriend and I recently stayed at Pousada Portal das Artes. The first thing to state is that despite the cost (cheap!) the pousada in no way feels like it is neglected. It is a nice building, with quality fittings and furnishings. Breakfast was also included, although this was not as good as at some of the other places I stayed in Brazil, but was still decent.
The second thing to note is the location. It is a 20-25 minute walk out of the historic centre of Paraty. While we didn't mind this too much, walking back at night along a road without a pavement was not the best, although we did feel safe at all times. I think you could probably get taxis, but we were on a budget!
Ruy is a great guy, speaks excellent English, and is more than willing to suggest things to do in the area (including transport tips for leaving the area if you so wish).
The wifi worked well and there were no real issues, although the signal wasn't great in some of the rooms themselves.
We also ended up staying a couple of extra nights as we were enjoying it so much.
In summary, if you want a cheap, friendly Pousada, and don't mind walking to the centre, this is a great place to stay.
