“Is this one of the best hotels in Hungary?”

We cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. On our second visit, we were recognised and greeted as we came through the door. The stafff were delightful and our room was lovely. On our first vist, we had an Ambassador suite, but this time, because we were there for only two nights, we went into a Small Classic suite, which was perfect. The rooms are clean and well equipped and the decor is airy, light and very pleasant. The room was cleaned by a member of staff, who left us a choclate St Nicholas ( this being St Nicholas' Day) When we left we were given embroidered book marks. Ok - many hotels might do the same, but here it is all done with great warmth and charm and visitors are made to feel like welcome guests, not just paying customers. We were there in early December and so the Advent candles were a warm and welcoming sight in the hall. It is certainly somewhere we would recommend and represents excellent value for money, while going that extra mile. A lovely hotel.

Area recommendations
As our son is married to a Hungarian and they live in the city, we have visited places unknown to most tourists. This time we went to the atmospheric Israeli Cemetery and to Godolo, then up to Sar-Hegy on the Buda Hills for a panoramic view of Buda and Pest and beyond. For a light meal - especially breakfast - the Eco Cafe on Andrassy utca is delightful - with the best cappuccinos in town. We were disappointed, this time, with the cafe in the Alexandra Bookshop, having been habitues for some time, however, the bookshop itself iis worth a visit. The Hungarian House of Photography at Mai Mano House, Nagymezo utca is always fascinating and anywhere along Andrassy utca, exploring the side streets around the hotel, is a good way to spend an afternoon. Bela Bartok's House has good concerts - were managed to get the last seats to hear the Brtok Quyartet play Janacek and - of course - Bartok. The National Gallery on Castle Hill has a wonderful collection of Hungarian painting, giving a good introduction to the subject - making visits to Sentandre for example, much more interesting. For those who like to travel further, we would recommend the house of the painter István Szőnyi at Bartoky u. 7, Zebegény on the Danube, near the Slovak border, Not only for the house/museum, but for the village itself.
When to go
Any time. We have been in all seasons, in all weathers.
Getting around
Public transport is cheap and efficient and plentiful. For the over 65's it is free.
What to pack
Stout walking shoes. Smart casual clothes. Extra cards for your camera. The odd small present - people can be very hospitable and so it is always good to try to have something to hand.
Family-friendly activities
The Children's Railway is always a winner with children - and adults. Hungarians are brilliant at puppetry and so maybe a visit to the puppet theatre in pest.

“Spacious, sophisticated, lovely”

The hotel was wonderful value for the money, quiet, elegant, large, well-equipped apartment, and around the corner from the 5th Avenue of Budapest, the subway and the bus lines. recommend it without reservations.

“Better than a hotel any day!”

As I usually struggle to find anything suitable to eat at breakfast in hotels I thought this trip we would go for an apartment and make our own (I'm a strict vegetarian who is also diabetic!). We had that basic Classic apartment which was everything we had hoped for:- Aircon which worked (last 5 star hotel we stayed in Malta take note!) A bath to soak away the tired feet from all that walking Nice Kitchen area with coffee filter machine and big fridge for all our stuff King size bed with a firm mattress (however pillows were a bit lumpy!) Very pleasant staff who all spoke great English Fantastic location just off Andrassy and in 'spitting' distance of a Metro stop Two wonderful coffee/cake shops within a minute's walk Quiet location - couldn't hear any traffic or street noise from our apartment Room overlooked the central courtyard garden and had big french windows too By the way they do breakfast (at a charge) for those that don't want to make their own Lastly, a small supermarket also within a minute, on the corner of Izabella utca and Aradi utca and a covered Food Market within 5 minutes at Hunyadi ter We simply loved it and will be recommending to anyone who have similar needs to us.

Area recommendations
There are so many lovely places in Budapest it would be impossible to single only one area out. Brave the public transport and get to as many areas as you can, you won't regret it. For amazing views go to Gellert Hill (take the number 27 bus and it's just a short 5-10 minute walk) is it spectacular.
Getting around
We bought a Budapest Card which gives you free travel on all forms of Public Transport (plus discount in some museums). However, when we next return we may investigate on just a travel pass which might be cheaper.
What to pack
Make sure you have comfy shoes as you'll want to walk lots, some of the streets are a bit uneven in the park areas plus some also are cobbled.
Events and shows
For a great evening out go to the Opera, the building inside is simply staggering and the music is great too.
Other
We took a Yellow Zebra bike tour on our first day (Google them for details) which lasts about 3 hours (starts at 11am ish) which gives you a great start to the city. If you are very unfit the hill up to the Castle District might challenge you but the view is worth it. The guide was great (Anna) and spoke excellent English as did all the staff in the Yellow Zebra shop (just behind The Opera House).

“The Hotel to stay outside hot weather periods.”

The Hotel , Apartment and the Staff were first class with one exception. To say the apartment was air conditioned is a little bit difficult to understand. The bedroom had some form of cooling but only appeared to be able to reduce the temperature by possibly 1 C at best. The sitting/kitchen area had no cooling. Use this hotel out of the hot season and you will be very very satisfied. Based on our experiece it is not the place to stay when it is very hot ( we had temperatures during the day of 30+C).

Area recommendations
City Centre for general conveniece.

“Best secret in Budapest”

The staff at the Mamaison Residence Izabella was extremely helpful and courteous. They recommended local restaurants which were delightful. Helped us out with transportation during our stay and returning to the airport on departure. When staying here, make sure you say the hotel's full name when booking transportation as there is another "Mamaison" on Andrassy and it can get confusing for taxis and vans. Hotel is quiet, neighborhood safe. Has a great breakfast in the morning (you can even get coffee during the night if you go downstairs.). Free internet in the lobby (one laptop), but we never had to wait.

Dining
Try the Mentsa Restaurant near the Octagon. Great food and frequented by locals. Courteous staff, many of whom speak English.

“Comfortable and excellent service.”

The hotel rooms are spacious and comfortable, the management keen to respond to every request. The only slight downside is the lack of catering facilities, though the hotel offers to arrange delivery from a nearby restaurant. Getting a car into the garage is something of a challenge. However, this will be my preferred place to stay in Budapest from here on.

“A real hidden gem of a hotel in Budapest”

The Izabella proved to be a lucky and terrific find. Hotel was spotlessly clean. Staff were exceptionally helpful and considerate. The suite was spacious and comfortable with patio doors onto a courtyard garden. The hotel was ideally situated in a very quiet area just off Andrassy and only two minutes walk from a metro station. Our stay was a thoroughly enjoyable experience with absolutely no negatives.

Area recommendations
Vist the Szechenyi thermal spring spa in the city park for a wonderful, relaxing and unforgettable exprience.
Traveller's tip
The Aranyszarvas Bistro had great atmosphere, great service and most importantly fantastic food at astonishingly reasonable prices. Visit the Gerbaud coffeee house in Vorosmarty Ter for a marvellous breakfast.

“Family Friendly”

Good living space and located right off the main boulevard. The room service was from a nearby Italian restaurant and was excellent. The staff was friendly to the kids. Overall a great spot, and highly recommend it.
