“Faded grandeur, but grandeur all the same”

Whatever anyone says about the Gellert Hotel, it certainly has character - a feature missing from the majority of modern chain establishments. Yes my room was small, with an even smaller bathroom, but it was more than adequate for someone travelling alone such as myself. The hotel facilities are excellent and when you consider the price includes a sumptuous breakfast and entrance into the beautiful thermal baths, this hotel is good value.

“hotel gellert”

poor quality rooms, might have been nice 50 years ago, and haven't been touched since, stinks of mouldy carpets and fabrics, and if you don't like cigarrette smell, then don't go here all rooms still smell from before the smoking ban was introduced baths were nice though

“Dont stay here”

I booked the hotel as it is famous in Budapest and has the spa. I had booked a single room with shower. On arrival, it is clear to see that the hotel is tired. The exterior is poor as is the interior. The room was awful. No room to swing a cat. No tea/coffee making facilities, no mini bar. The bathroom was barely big enough to get in. The toilet wasnt bolted to the floor and rocked when you sat down. The shower gel provided was not enough to wash a mouse. The room was poorly furnished with very very old furniture. The breakfast was awful. Service was terrible and there were not enough tables. I could go on but I think you get the idea. I did not complain as there was just too much to complain about. Awful, tired hotel. Please get into at least the 20th century

“great place of heritage”

A charming and relaxing city with friendly people - great walking with family and friends enjoying unusual mix of eras embodied in the architecture, street music, great dining, silent night streets... and, of course, unforgettable hot springs...

Area recommendations
After Gellet baths cross the green bridge from Gellert hill towards the Marketplace, then take walking street across the road... then strall along Andrassi street towards park of Heroes, take back a yellow subway line cross Danube, walk up the hill towards the old bastion and walk back through the Chain Bridge to the big Cathedral... Take left towards the Parliament...

“A unique hotel - along with the spa an experience not to be missed.”

If you want the same box rooms furnishings from your hotel, such that you cannot tell if you are in Bangkok or in Birmingham then this is not the Hotel for you. But if you are a true traveller wishing to have a disctinct and unique experience in each destination then this excellent Spa hotel is a must. There are some anchronisms but that all adds to the character. The staff are helpful, the decor beutiful, the spa expereince a joy. For me there is no where else to stay in Budapest.

Area recommendations
Any guide will direct you to the usual places. I would just add to try the local (as well as main) market hall, and try the cafes there.

“Very Disappointed”

When booking the hotel Expedia shows a rating of 4 out of 5. But to rate your hotel Expedia shows 2 out of 5. Now we know why. - Excellent Staff-Parking Staff went out of their way to assist and helpful (Wonderful) - Fantasic Breakfast-Staff friendly and wonderful -Lovley front entry THAT's it Our first room was an economy room (we paid for a standard overlooking the courtyarrd) It was so small you couldn't fit your suit cases in the room and was overlooking the roof. We showed them what we had booked on Expedia and were moved to be moved to a room that looked like the picture. #208 This is what we got!! - Horrible room-Room doors look like meat storage locker doors - Rug - Stained - Holes in floor under rug - Broken Window partially covered with plywood - Ceramic tiles badly worn -Toilet, and Sink both had cracks -Taps - no chrome left on them. -Soap dish and Toilet paper holder falling off wall -Medicine Cabinet - broken hing -Closet door won't close -Wallpaper pealing on the wall -Outside patio-concrete pealing (had to were shoes at all times) -Door frames rotten We later found out it was a room that had not been renovated yet. We also got Athletes foot from the pool. Great location, but that's it.

“happy to return”

The hotel also is a spa complex. In my younger years I have been at the spa many times. I had my wedding breakfast in the Goblin Room too. But this was the first time I have stayed at the hotel. I am seriously looking for an excuse to return. My ONLY grievance was the bad furnishing. I was not too pleased in the SOROZO Restaurant either, I did not like the billing. (But I do not have to eat there again even if I return to the hotel!)

Area recommendations
The Castle district. Full with old buildings or the remnants of them. The view. The many spas, Roman or Turkish origins. Various, all good for health. The hills in Buda. Good for walks, easily reached by public transport.

“Stay at the Gellert”

A brief stay of 4 nights, but excellent value for money - breakfast included, plus entry to the magnificant spas and pools. The spas themselves make the stay worthwhile - make as much use as possible and just relax. I intend to get back there as soon as I can - the staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms still have some of the austerity of the communist past, but are clean and comfortable. Ovderall, a very good and relaxing stay.

What to pack
If you are bit larger than usual (like me) make sure you take a large bathrobe - the ones provided by the hotel do not cater for the fuller figure. Also take some flip-flops or similar for the walk to the spa.
