“a fantastic hotel”

We went to Budapest for the Christmas markets. The hotel was ideally situated for the markets and shops. It was clean and well maintained. The staff were brilliant; spoke good English and were very helpful. Breakfast was very good - buffet from 7 - 10 and plenty of choice. We were very impressed with this hotel and will definitely return.

Area recommendations
I would recommend getting the red tour bus which covers the whole city. Round trip takes 2.5 hours but ticket is valid for 48 hours so you have time to spend at all major attractions, especially the castle, citadel and parliament. Wide choice of shops and places to eat.
When to go
We went in December for the Christmas markets which was brilliant. Very busy at weekends though.

“Great Hotel!”

We were very pleased with this hotel; the location cannot be faulted, being only metres away from St. Stephen's Basillica and central to the Chain Bridge, over to Buda and Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion etc.. Our room was small but comfortable and clean and I could not fault it in any way; breakfast was beautifully laid out, plentiful and about what I expected for a continental selection, so happy for the four days we were visiting. We would not hesitate to return to the hotel and indeed Budapest itself; walking along the Danube, looking over to Buda and across to Parliament is something I will remember forever. Beautiful, beautiful city and great stay in a warm, cosy hotel.

“Supurb hotel in central location at affordable rates”

The hotel was centrally located, yet very quiet at night and was easy to get to and from the airport (about 40 minutes via bus 200E and Metro M3). The room was well furnished and comfortable and the breakfast was more than ample.

Area recommendations
The castle grounds and Citadella on Buda side of the Danube river offer great views of the city and it is particulary scenic after sunset when the city lights up (the chain bridge in particular is of interest only when the floodlights come on). The park and zoo are also worth visiting on Pest side.

“Perfect Location”

Hotel Central Basilica in Budapest was affordable, clean, comfortable and conveniently located, providing easy access to all other parts of the city. It was a quick walk from the hotel to Deak Ter Metro Station, where all subway lines originate, and to the trolley that goes to the Buda side of the Danube. It was near a currency exchange store, coffee shops, good restaurants and souvenir shops. A free walking tour meets outside the hotel every day at 2:30. Staff at Hotel Central Basilica were courteous and helpful. The rooms were small but clean and comfortable, and the plumbing in the bathrooms worked well. Free breakfast offered a variety of choices, from eggs to hot cereal. I highly recommend Hotel Central Basilica for its location, convenience and price.

Area recommendations
Every neighborhood in Budapest is worth exploring, but don't miss the Jewish Quarter, which has Europe's largest Synagogue and lots of nightlife in its many "ruin bars." It is also a great neighborhood to learn about the holocaust in Budapest, especially on one of the free walking tours.
When to go
Any time.
Getting there
American Airlines now offers non-stop flights both ways between JFK and Ferihegy Airports.
Getting around
Get a subway map (very easy to get around by subway) and use the trolley to travel between the Pest and Buda sides of the city. But try to walk as much as possible, so you don't miss anything, and because Budapest is safe and beautiful.
What to pack
Weather is similar to New York, but about 5 to 10 degrees cooler, so pack according to seaonal temperatures. Bring an umbrella, rain poncho and hat, since rain happens there much as it does in NY. Pack a washcloth for the shower, as most European hotels do not provide them. Comfortable walking shoes.
Must see
Parliament Building, Opera House, House of Terror Museum, City Park (Fairy Tale Castle, Heroes' Square, Szechenyi Barths), Gundel Restaurant, St. Stephen's Basilica, Fisherman's Bastion, Matthias Church, Dohanyi Street Synagogue, a nighttime boat ride on the Danube, a classical music concert, some "ruin" bars in the Jewish Quarter.
Shopping
Andrassy Ut for haute couture; Muzeum Korut for antiques; Central Market on Vamhaz Korut and the surrounding neighborhood for souvenirs, food, clothing.
Dining
Gundel and Gerbeaud for pricey but excellent gourmet Hungarian food. Il Terzo Cerchio Ristorante/Pizzeria(on the corner of Dohanyi & Nyar) for a great brick oven pizza. Try the Langos, a pizza-like snack with sour cream, melted cheese and garlic & oil spread on top. Try the Hungarian wines, the Palinka, and a popular candy bar called Pottyos Turo Rudi.
Nightlife
Szimpla (on Kazinczy Utca between DohanyUtca and Wesselenyi Utca), and Old Man's Music Pub (Akacfa Utca), both in the Jewish Quarter. Try to get tickets for something at the Opera House on Andrassy Ut, and check St. Stephen's Basilica for weekly concerts of Classical favorites featuring their magnificent pipe organ. And then, just look and listen, it's all around you, everywhere, every night!

“Excellent Hotel”

The location was excellent and the staff was very helpful. The breakfast was great and they always added new items everyday. Make sure you get the superior room if you bring more than one luggage item. The single room is too small. The hotel is well located near Vaci Utca and the Castle and Bridge. You can even go out around midnight for a walk to Andrassy or around the Bridge where the InterContinental and the Sofitel are located. Just one tip, make sure you do not arrive on a holiday when some sorrounding streets are closed and access to the hotel is almost impossible. I had to walk from Bacsy to the Basilica in the middle of the rain with all my luggage, which was unconfortable to deal with traffic. Other than this minor thing, the hotel is excellent.

Area recommendations
Vaci Utca, Buda District (go there for the entire day on sunny day) and the Citadella (get ready to walk and bring 2 cameras to get the most beautiful views of the city)
When to go
Spring or Summer
Getting around
Do your homework about the subway and tram system.

“Fantastic location”

Like others we were impressed by the location of the hotel being as it was so close to many main attractions. Pleasant area with pleasant staff who were always helpful when approached. The hotel was fairly basic but is certainly no worse than many 4* hotels we have experienced in other cities. Overall it is a good choice of hotel from which to explore Budapest. As first time visitors to the Budapest it was a good introduction to the city. Contrary to what we expected there was no city tax and breakfast was more than sufficient. For first time visitors this would be a good choice of hotel for exploring what is a lively city and indeed not so bad for any planned return visits!

Area recommendations
Explore the city any which way you can. It is fairly big but accessible and importantly it feels safe. Don't be afraid to venture. Budapest is a good alternative to Prague, perhaps even more laid back than its neighbour. It doesn't match its rival on looks but the vibrancy and people of the city make up for this.

“Quite happy with this hotel !”

The location of this hotel is excellent. It's right next to St. Stephen Church where almost nightly concert is held. There are many good restaurants around. The staff of the hotel is polite and friendly and the hotel room is more than acceptable. I will definitely go back to this hotel if I will visit Budapest again.

“Very impressed”

We were in Budapest for the marathon in October 2011. We were very impressed with the hotel and its location, right in the centre with all the facilities you could want. e.g. restaurants, metro and easy walking distance. The staff were very helpful, good buffet breakfast - all in all a great place to stay We will certainly recommend to friends and family.

Area recommendations
Take the city tour, good value for money as it lasts 2 days. includes a boat ride. It is a good way of seeing the city and then you can choose what interests you most.

“Location excellent”

The hotel was situated on the road bordering St Stephen's Basilica making it very easy to find and very centrally situated to both the bridge and the Deak Square metro terminal. The service from the desk staff was very good and they spoke excellent English. The breakfast was OK - typical continental - cold meats, bread, cereal and croissants as wel as scrambled eggs - but it was convenient to have had breakfast before venturing out and there was plenty of everything. Overall I would recommend this hotel as it was surrounded by coffee shops and restaurants and the atmospere around the square in the evenings was very good with lots going on.
