“Can't see me going back there”

The hotel is in a convenient location with ample free parking. This I would say is one of the few plus points. The breakfast was basic, but ample for my needs. The room was very small, the bed intolorably uncomfortable. The hotel had a smell of sewage all over it. I would say this smell comes from the canal. It is very offputting. There is a smokers room which also fills the whole of the hotel with smoke. This I found very offensive. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone. My advice is to pay more for a comfortable holiday.

“You won't be disappointed”

Da Barge is a 22-room hotel based on a converted ship which previously used to work on this same waterway. Our room was not cramped but the limitations of the vessel's layout mean that you should be prepared for it to be compact. You are out of the City centre but only about 10 minutes' walk from it, and we didn't used our car throughout our stay. The hotel staff were attentive and pleasant and very capable. You needn't worry about the language when you stay in Bruges. Virtually everyone seems to speak about five of them and English is prevalent. We had a delightful, stress-free holiday.

Area recommendations
Bruges is compact and you can explore all of it on foot, although the almost obligatory canal boat trip is good vaule and very worthwhile.

“Bruges' best kept secret”

This hotel is very close to the railway station. It takes about 15 minutes to walk into the centre, a very relaxing pretty walk though. It was a nice experience staying on a barge actually afloat. The breakfast had an excellent variety of both cooked and cold food. If you do choose this hotel, ask for a room overlooking the water and not the car park or tow path, as it can be a little noisy in high season.

Dining
For a reasonably priced coffee, try Hema or Panos. Both are excellent. Both are on the main shopping street.

“Hotel on a boat!”

Its something different. If you are after something a bit Quirky or romantic, this could be the place. Im not sure i would want to stay for too long, but for a night or two its lovely. the rooms were clean and tidy, warm enough in winter, quite compact but it is a converted barge! Make sure to ask for a room facing the water, our room was on the bottom deck and the window opened out straight above the water level. watch out for the ducks! Its not far from the main town, and its a nice walk through the park. The food is not very cheap, but nor is the rest of town, but the portions were huge!

“TOO FAR FROM THE MARKETPLACE”

Though it was quaint, if you want to explore and walk it is for you. Not in the heart of Brugges. Though it was booked for 2, it was big enough for one; cabin was too small. The kitchen closed 10 pm and all day Wed. The front desk closed at 7 pm. Luckily for the deal or I wouldn't have stayed there.

Traveller's tip
Brugges is a small village that is walker friendly. I was a single woman and I felt safe. Get there early because the shops are closed by 1830; food is still available in the square.

“Very enjoyable stay”

Although the external appearance initially concerned my wife (it is after all a barge) internally this is a nice hotel. Room was clean and although not large perfectly adequate. After trying the hotel restaurant on our first night we didn't bother looking elsewhere (apart from Wednesday when it is shut). Breakfast is excellent in quality, quantity and range and dinner was very good too. It is a short walk from the centre but taking the route through Minnewater is very pleasant. Staff very all very helpful and spoke good English.

Traveller's tip
Eating out is not cheap in Bruges but the portions can be huge. Take the discount card issued at the hotel reception everywhere with you as lost of places offer reductions. Also the Belgians still have some establishments that allow smoking inside which appeared strange to our eyes.

“Quacking time at Boat Hotel de Barge”

Our stay at Boat Hotel de Barge was wonderful, the window in our room on the lower floor opened directly onto the canal, where the local duck population made their presence known as soon as the window was opened. The room was a bit small, but this was to be expected - it is a boat after all - very cosy, very clean, and very comfortable. The bathroom was of adequate size and had a powerful shower, sink and loo, all spotlessly clean, the TV had English channels including ITV1. The breakfast buffet had plenty of choice, hot and cold and set us up for a good days sightseeing. We took our bicycles and were able to keep them in a shelter at the hotel. The short walk into town was through the lovely park directly to the centre of old Bruge, the location of the hotel was easy to access by car and parking out the front for free. All the staff we met at the hotel were very friendly and helpful. We had a great time and highly recommend this hotel for a romantic stay in beautiful Bruges.

Traveller's tip
Hire or take a bicycle and cycle around the town and canal paths to really get a taste of Bruges and expand upon the area you explore. We got to see so much more and saved our legs from walking miles. The whole town is geared up for cyclists with bike stands everywhere and unrestricted access, even able to cycle both directions in most one way streets. There are no hills so it was easy going even for the less fit person.

“Hotel with a difference (and ducks!)”

Room was nice - we had an upstairs double cabin overlooking the water. However, if I had been overlooking the carpark or the path I would have demanded a room change in all honesty. Room was clean enough but not spotless and an adequate size. There were a few squashed mosquitos on the walls which should have been cleaned off and the walls were in need of a lick of paint. Beds were firm (which was fine for us) but take your own pillow - they are really dreadful! I'm painting a bleak picture here but it isn't, honestly. The views were lovely and the boats passing, feeding the ducks and watching rabbits on opposite bank were a relaxing treat. Breakfasts were also fine with plenty of choice - not always enough tables though. Takes about 10 mins quick walk into Bruges centre. Go over the bridge and through the park - not down the main road which is the way the hotel will show you. It's quicker and much prettier. Other than breakfast we didn't eat at the hotel so can't comment. Initially thought their prices were expensive but Bruges is very expensive everywhere so was probably comparable. All in all a lovely stay and would stay at the Barge again.

Traveller's tip
Take a boat trip - good value for money and takes you pretty much everywhere you can go. Take plenty of money - eating out verges on being extortionate with many meals not including chips, bread etc so you have to buy it as an add on. For a fab chicken or steak meal go to the Chicken-in - sounds terrible but really was excellent. It's just off the main square in Sint Amandsstraat. Take the train to Ghent for the day. Ghent is much cheaper too so fill up on a meal whilst you're there.

“Lovely Hotel”

A very good hotel, good service, short walk to the centre, very helpful staff and a good breakfast!

Traveller's tip
You must visit the Half Moon Brewery (the only beer to be brewed in Bruge)very good/informative/funny tour and beautiful beer!
