“Totally Worth It”

As a solo traveler, I picked a single, windowless room, at Mornington Hotel Stockholm Bromma to save money. I knew that it isn't in Copenhagen city center, and it involves taking a short bus ride to a T-station (a.k.a. Tunnelbana, Metro) and then get on the metro train to get to Stockholm City Center. The hotel itself is very modern and clean. There are sitting areas in the hotel lobby and outdoor balcony. Fast and reliable Wifi is provided at no additional charge. The continental breakfast is excellent. They even offer hot dishes such as sausage, bacon, steamed eggs, soft and hard broiled eggs. All the bus stops are within a block. The buses come by very frequently, and the schedules are posted at the bus stops. You can take 110 or 112 to Alvik T-station or 509 to Brommaplan T-station, so you never have to wait long. To get to Arlanda Airport, take 177 or 176 toward Morby Centrium and get off at Frosunda stop to take Flygbussarna Airport Coach. You can pay for Flygbussarna with a credit card without a reservation. Tickets for local buses are available for sale at the hotel reception counter. The staff is very helpful if you need directions on getting around. At T-stations, you can get a 3 day pass that's good for both bus and metro in all zones. Lastly, a huge discount shopping center is located just across the street. "City Gross" sign is visible from the hotel. You can easily find souvenirs such as chocolate and candy or other useful items for much less $$ there.

What to pack
Be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes and rain gear. It didn't rain (almost did though) while I was in Stockholm, but it rained a lot when I traveled in Copenhagen. The weather can change very rapidly in that area. Bring a jacket with you while you are out, because it can go from hot to cold within minutes.

“Great value in Sthlm suburbs w. easy access to City. Great free breakfast Gym & WiFi.”

Excellent value. Great staff. Wonderful gym. Great breakfast despite recent downgrade to reduced fresh fruit options. Clean rooms. Lack of windows actually an advantage for sleeping on the long daylit nights in the Land of the Midnight Sun. Complimentary Cable TV access w. CNN and BBC and may English language programs is an another valued amenity. Quiet and relaxing. Can be in the center of town in 30 min via bus and rail at low cost. Highly recommended especially to those who know Stockholm and its many attractions.

Area recommendations
To reduce costs maybe consider shopping at nearby City Gross in the Carlsberg Brewery complex just across the street within 5 to 10 min walking distance.
Getting around
Pre-book Metro Taxi via front desk to Arlanda Stockholm airport at cheaper fare than all others and accepts all major credit cards.

“The room with no view”

Nice hotel, great location. Kinda wierd to have a room without a window, but Sweden is very expencive, you have to save anywhere you can. Fantastic breakfast tho, one of the best included brackfasts I've ever seen!

“A Pleasant Experience”

I booked for a single no window room but found the ventiliation to be bad. Requested staff to look into the aircondition but instead she readily did a switch of room for me. I was offered to upgrade to the 5th floor with windows single bed room at no additional cost.

“Just too far out to be a good hotel”

I take public transportation every day and have been doing so in various countries & on multiple continents for over a decade. Despite these years of practice, I would STILL consider the location of this hotel to be be too inconvenient and out of the way public transit-wise to be practical. The metro lines to the Stockholm stop running around 12-1am. If you want to enjoy night entertainment in the city, you will be stranded and forced to take a [very expensive] taxi back home. Also, if you need to get to from the hotel to the Central Station (bus depot), you need to wait for the bus (which comes once every 15/20min or so), take this 15min to the metro, wait for a metro line (which comes once every 15min), take this 15min to the main station [which is the size of a shopping mall, by the way], and walk 10min through the station to get to your gate. IF you're lucky and don't have to wait, it is possible you could leave the hotel 40min before your bus / train departs and *just* make it. More realistically, though, you'll have waits worked into you commute and will thus require something closer to an hour... which to me is a bit too far. About accommodations: My room was very clean, but it lacked a window. And ventilation. I had planned to work in a bit in my space, but it got too hot and stuffy to be productive there. On the plus side, there was free wireless internet. About breakfast: There were long breakfast hours, and the breakfast was fantastic.

Area recommendations
Check out one of the hipper, less posh neighborhoods if you can -- the area around Medborgarplatsen is a great place to start.
Nightlife
If you're hanging out around town, do know that Stockholm bouncers are hired to and will discriminate on who they admit. While this is principally meant to keep out the rowdy and the lower-class, less experienced guards have been known to also keep out the brown-skinned and / or more obviously ethnic. I say this, having lived with a few Swedish bouncers who've shared the admission policy with me. If you happen to be obviously ethnic or don't obviously look like money, you would be wise to (a) dress up, (b) be breathalizer-level sober [they'll commonly deny you access because they say you look "drunk" -- whether or not you've been drinking], (c) travel with at least one pretty girl per guy [and let her lead the group in], and (d) still have a back-up plan of where you'd like to go if you don't get in. Also know that bars close at 1am, clubs as 3am, and some special clubs at 5am. If you are going to be out late dancing or having fun about town, you may as well stay out til 5and catch one of the early metro trains back. Otherwise, if you're out during a week night, you might just have to catch a taxi as the metro stops running around 1am on those nights.

“Very Good Stockholm Hotel”

The hotel offers a variety of activities. If you are staying in a budget room, like I was, and you intend to use the gym or sauna then buy a pass when you check in for about 68Kr. This will let you use the facilities throughout your stay and as they are open 6am-11pm you are sure to have some downtime where you can make use of them. The gym offers views of the city of Stockholm and the sauan offers views of landing and departing aircraft from Bromma Airport. As I was in a budget room there were no windows, however as the area surrounding the hotel is mainly business there is not a lot to see and the noise from the low flying aircraft would probably have been a distraction. As my room had no windows I was not affected at all by aircraft noise during my 3 day stay. The breakfast buffet is ok, there are the usual European offerings, cold meat, cheese, cereal, lot sof bread and fruit juice, but there is also food such as bacon, eggs, sausages and toast on offer too. The free wifi is very useful and the TV in the room has many English, Swedish, German and Italian channels. There is also a small selection of books in the rooms too.

Area recommendations
I would reccommend the old town(Gamla Stan) to any visitor to Stockholm as it contains most of the sights and allows a visitor to get a real feel of the city. The TV tower, located just outside the city is also a must visit attraction as it allows very good views of the entire Stockholm area and doesn't cost much, considering the rest of the city can be pricey. A day trip to the Aland Islands in Finland can and should be made from Stockholm as well.
Getting there
Although when looked at on a map this hotel does seem quite far out of the city centre it is very easy to get to and takes under 30 minutes at the peak times and even in the very early morning it only takes around 40 minutes. The nearest Metro station is Brommaplan and from there a number of busses go to the Hotel (Norrbyvagen stop), the number 509 stops under 200m from the hotel. To get back to Brommaplan station, almost any bus from the bus stop opposite the hotel will go there in under 10 minutes. During the early morning there is also the option of taking the bus to Solna station and then the underground to the city centre. I took this route on a Saturyday morning and was in the city terminalen (central transport hub) within 45 minutes of leaving my hotel room.
Getting around
The best and easiest way to get around Stocholm is by Bus and Underground train (Tunelbanen). There are numerous passes that can be bought. A 3 Day (72 hour) pass will cover a long weekend break and will cost around £20 (Winter 2010 prices). Passes are also offered for 24, 48 hours and for 1 week. Even if you don't think you'll use the public transport much it is still worth having as the few times you may use it will probably save you money over paying for single fares. As my visit was in winter there were very limited opportunities to take a boat tour (most of the lakes and rivers were frozen solid), however there seemed to be a very wide selection on offer and the boat tours seemed to cover a large area.
