Stroll through gardens and admire the Italianate design of this mansion, whose unaltered interiors offer a window into the lives of its Victorian inhabitants.

Landscape gardens with manicured hedges and a period interior preserved in its original state combine to form the exquisite Brodsworth Hall. This Victorian country estate proudly displays the house unchanged from its appearance in the 1860s. At that time it was inhabited by the aristocratic Thellusson family and their servants. Study the centuries-old furniture and décor of the mansion to understand the dramatic ups and downs of its owners.

Go on a guided tour of the house for a detailed history. Hints of gradual decline are apparent alongside the grandiose features of the halls and chambers. Notice the faded state of the original carpets and wallpaper, which remain today to provide a genuine feel to this historic home.

See some of the relics that belonged to former owner Charles Thellusson in his woodworking room. A stuffed pigeon and a World War II cradle gas mask for a baby are among the intriguing artifacts.

For a change of scenery, head outside to the formal gardens, where trees and colorful floral displays decorate the well-kept lawn. Enjoy views of the formal gardens and grounds from the restored summerhouse and inspect the bedding plants in the Flower Garden.

Let your kids play on the swing and slide of the wooden climbing frame near the church. In summer, live brass bands lure music enthusiasts to the grounds. Relax with hot drinks in the tearoom or terrace, which offers outdoor seating during good weather. Consider bringing your own food and drinks for a picnic in the gardens.

There is a fee to enter the complex, with discounts for kids. The estate opens daily in summer from morning until late afternoon. For opening times in other months, check the English Heritage website.

Find Brodsworth Hall in the outskirts of its namesake village, 6 miles (10 kilometers) northwest of Doncaster. Ride a direct bus to the house to get here in 25 minutes. See nearby attractions such as the St. Michael and All Angels Church and the Brodsworth Community Woodland.
