"Experience could not have been better."
Superb location a few steps from Brighton center and virtually in the heart of Kemptown, yet on a quiet street ensuring a good night''s sleep. Cosy comfortable exceptionally clean rooms with lots of little extras. Best of all hosts Chris's and Terry's friendly, generous and always helpful attention. Hard to think of what could have made my stay any better.

The Downs Hotel

"Look, it's a pub, not the Ritz."
The Downs Hotel is built on a busy corner, and looks a little shabby. I chose this hotel because it is close to the hospital where my wife was having surgery. I would not have considered it for a vacation. The bathroom was clean, the bed was comfortable, the breakfast was enormous. The staff were cheerful and polite. Because it's a pub noise from the bar finds it's way to the rooms above, and for this reason I would not recommend it for young children. However, the noise dies down by 10:30 or so, so it's ok for adults. The Downs also serves lunches and dinners and the menu is varied and we'll cooked. I heartily recommend the sausage and mash! I have already recommended this hotel to friends. It's also handy for Brighton Racecourse, if that's your bag.

"King and Queen for a Day"
We stayed for one night in the La Chambre De Louis room. This is a really fun room with wonderful trompe l'oeil-decorated walls, paintings that have clearly been chosen with some thought, faux candle chandeliers and a very cool four-poster with canopy. A really high ceiling gives a great sense of space; the huge balcony windows can be opened (but watch out for the gulls!) and a chaise-longue lets you recline and watch the world go by. And yes, you can even see the sea! We chose this hotel deliberately to avoid the sterile, soulless 'big name' hotels, and we were really pleased we did. We found friendly, helpful staff and a really happy atmosphere. Breakfast included a choice of ham and cheeses, cerials, fruit juices, tea/coffee, toast - the usual continental fare. What more do you want?

"A little gem of a hotel. Looking forward to my next visit."
Amazing little hotel in Kemptown which has lots of great bars, pubs and restaurants. Close to the centre of Brighton and the beach. Staff at hotel friendly but discreet. Bar was very nice although we did not drink there. It is also used as the breakfast room and has some interesting artwork done by local artists. Breakfast was continental and there was a big variety to choose from. Hotel room was small but adequate. Stylishly decorated with lovely furniture. Bed was very comfortable. Shower was powerful, with Molton Brown products provided. I will definately be staying there again. The sooner the better!
