“Horrible hotel”
I chose this hotel because of it's proximity to the train station and that was it's only positive feature. Very small, dirty, uncomfortable, rundown rooms; tiniest lift in the world that could barely carry 2 people with minimal luggage and a very noisy, dirty neighbourhood were overall impressions. However, the biggest problem was the lack of airconditioning during hot October weather (although not unusually hot for Marseilles at that time of the year). Staff informed us that the hotel is automatically heated from 1 October, making the place hideously hot and stuffy. Opening windows let in noise and odours, although staff assured us that we were in a quiet room being on the 3rd floor. This is definitely one to avoid and we were surprised it was recommended by expedia - first real let down from this source.
“NO AIR CONDITIONING”
The air conditioning has been broken for a long time. There was no AC during the four days of our hotel stay. It was July and I knew it would be scorching hot -- that's why I picked a hotel with AC -- or so I thought. The hotel seems to be running out of money to fix things. They said they could not afford to give us two credit card style room keys. On the plus side, the location is good, only two blocks from the train station and the breakfast was a good value.
“Dirty, Dirty, Dirty.”
We were very disappointed in the accomodations, although the location, for Marseilles, wasn't bad, the room was falling apart and so filthy we could barely stand it. If it was not already paid for, we would have left early.
“A room to sleep in - nothing else!”
Hotel was very central, heart of the 'North African' district and only few hundred yards from the rail/ bus station. Foyer & staff very presentable, but rest of the place could do with a good refurbishment. Room was exactly what we wanted - somewhere to sleep - but could have done with some TLC and a few basic amenities - eg kettle, anti slip mat, shower screen, etc. The walls were flexible and grubby, with a couple of holes 'punched' through them
“Ok hotel but not for a holiday”
I travelled to Marseille in order to get to know the city for a couple of days, and had a great time. New Hotel Select is very central and not too expensive- a short walk away from the station and from the Vieux Port. However it borders the shady quarter of Marseille and has a few unsightly characters hanging around, espescially intimidating for a girl. Not a scenic location for a hotel, quite noisy but definitely good if you just want to crash for a couple of nights.
“Good location, but extremely rude receptionist”
The middle-aged male receptionist was extremely rude and unfriendly. He almost threw the hotel room key onto the table when I checked in. It was simply ridiculous.
“Get What You Pay For”
Typical get what you pay for kind of place. Nothing special but absolutely nothing wrong with it. If you're looking for somewhere cheap to stay it's fine and very well located for the station and only a short walk to the main shopping street or harbour (not much else to see in Marseille!)
“Good”
Very functional but clean, handy for the station and Old Port.
