“Great Location”

Easy walking distance from the train station and the tourist sites. Hotel staff is friendly and they have a good breakfast. Hotel entrance is located 1/2 block down a graffiti-covered ally.

Area recommendations

We enjoyed eating a traditional (reasonably priced) Italian meal at the Trattitora dal Baissinot on Via Pialla. It's located in the same block as the hotel.

“Highly recommended”

The Zanhotel Il Canale is a very pleasant small hotel within easy reach of the centre of Bologna. We had 3 excellent meals in different restaurants all less than 200m from the hotel. The breakfast was very good, the hotel staff were friendly and our room was quite large and very clean, although there was no bath. The hotel only has 31 rooms so it was quiet and somewhat cosy. We were on the top floor where there was a small roof terrace. When we come back to Bologna, we will certainly stay here again.

Getting there

The bus from the Airport costs 6 euros each. It goes to the centre and turns up Via dell Indipendenza: if you then get off at the first stop, the hotel is only a few blocks away in Via Bertiera. If you stay on the bus, it goes to the Railway Station which quite a walk from the hotel.

“10 nights in Bologna”

Good base (we were travelling around the region) half way between railway station and historical centre, and with lots of restaurants and bars nearby. Only downside for those travellers with kids is that next door is a sex shop, quite modest but?

“Nice hotel, great location but not 3 *”

The Il Canale is perfectly placed between the railway station and the town square. Staff were pleasant and helpful, breakfast more than adequate and the room and bathroom spotlessly clean One or two niggles though. We had read other reviews about the large rooms. Room 22 was clearly a single room with a double bed in it. It only had a single headboard and there was no drawers for clothes, only a small wardrobe without enough hangers for the 2 of us for a week. The satelite TV only had Italian channels, not a major problem for us but when a hotel advertises satelite you expect to have some channels in English. Shampoo was not replaced and shower gel only turned up on the next to last morning after we had been out to buy our own. Nevertheless we liked it here and would go back. Only not into room 22! It was good value but don't expect a 3 star hotel!

Area recommendations

We did train trips on Italian Eurostar to Milan, Venice and Florence. Not cheap but incredibly fast on a new line under the mountains. Just over an hour to Milan and Venice and 40 minutes to Florence

“Very Reasonable Hotel”

Returned from our stay at Bologna a few days ago. Made a reservation with the hotel based on the reviews of other travellers. Please be asure that the positive reviews are not ill founded. The hotle is located within minutes of Via d. Independenza where the Aerobus stops. It was very flexible with our check in since we arrived early in the day. The room and the hotel itself was extremely well kept in terms of cleaniness. The staff was also helpful with advices about restaurants and places of interests. Lastly security was very good as well. There is constantly a member of staff at the reception. We noticed that if the reception is not staffed, the door is actually locked. We also got questioned every time there was a new staff that we have not met before to make sure we were actually staying at the hotel.

Area recommendations

You can ask the hotel staff about the following places since I already do not remember the name of the roads, Swine bar - a very relaxed and nice place for a few drinks and some snacks. It does excellent cocktails and the staff is very friendly. Donatello - a restaurant that is on the same street as the Swine bar and does very good Bolognese food. Gelato - there is an authentic gelato shop at the end of the street where the above two are. It is at the corner with Via d. Independenza.

Getting around

Aerobus is the port of call from the airport and to the hotel. Otherwise, we managed to walk everywhere that we wanted to go to. It was also a good way to just explore things that you didn't expect. We managed to find almost everything that was mentioned in the guide book that we had simply by walking randomly around the city.

“Clean, well located hotel”

We arrived very late and only stayed for one night but reception desk were really friendly and helpful and we had a lovely, clean, spacious family room (travelling with two young children) that was well air-conditioned.

“A Little Orange Gem”

The people at the front desk were very friendly and helpful with excellent English. We got to the hotel before our room was ready and had plans to journey out for the day. We left our luggage with the front desk and when our room was ready, they moved our bags into the room for us. The room was very orange which we had read about so we weren't too surprised. It was a decent, comfortable, clean room with a great bathroom. The room had a little mini bar and a safe. It was just off a main street so there were lots of choices for dinner and close to Piazza Maggiore. The breakfast was very nice and filling. We were satisfied with the whole experience and would go back in a heartbeat to stay there again. For the price we paid we thought it was quite a little gem.

Traveller's tip

Ask at some of the restaurants if they do take away for the pizza. A nice alternative to sitting in the restaurant when you can grab a pizza and a bottle of wine to enjoy back at the hotel.

“Enjoyed Bologna”

We found the Hotel to be well located, easy to walk to everywhere. A bit difficult to find if driving, make sure to rent a car with GPS!!!Bologna is a wonderful city, we enjoyed it very much and would recommend the Hotel to others. Breakfast, was perfect.

Shopping was very fun. Gelato was fantastic, the best was 1/2 block from the Zanhotel Canal, very dangerous...YUM!

not worth the money. very dark and room itself not very clean. bathroom was newer and clean. breakfast was ok.

“our third visit and we can't wait to go back”

This is a lovely hotel in the best of locations. A five minute walk from the Piazza Duomo. A short walk from the station. Great restaurants two minutes away from the hotel.
