“Ideal base in Bologna”

A friendly hotel - quiet and peaceful - with a beautiful courtyard and excellent breakfasts. Very helpful staff. Location is within walking distance of the city centre and there is convenient bus direct to railway station for exploring further afield.

“Charming and quiet”

The staff are charming and very helpful: they all speak English well. Our room was in a little garden courtyard and was spacious, with a good-sized bathroom. It had shutters and was dark and quiet at night: we slept very well there. The only problem is that it's about a ten minute walk to the centre of town and the hotel neighbourhood doesn't have much in the way of bars and restaurants. If you don't mind a bit of a walk, it's an excellent choice.

Area recommendations
The old town of Bologna is attractive, with arcaded streets. A large area is pedestrianised. We walked for miles and it was all interesting. Bologna is a foodie's paradise and the food market is fascinating: one butcher talked to us in great detail about different types of salami. The medieval museum is great.
When to go
Bologna is good for a winter break as the streets are arcaded, the hotels and restaurants are properly heated and there is plenty to see in the museums and palaces. Apparently it's very hot and humid in summer.

“Amazing value!”

Porta San Mamolo is a beautiful bed and breakfast, situated in the rolling hills of Langhe/Asti wine country. We had rented a car (I think you need one for the area,) and we spent our 2 days there exploring the little towns and tasting amazing Barolos and Barbarescos. The owners were very kind and helpful, and they recommended a great place to eat. The room was beautiful, with gorgeous views. Considering this was one of the cheapest places that we stayed on our trip, it is truly an amazing value!

“What a lovely hotel!!”

We loved our stay at the Porta San Mamolo hotel in Bologna. This extremely pretty hotel is staffed by the most gracious desk staff we have ever encountered. What lovely people and so incredibly helpful! The hotel is quiet, comfortable and conveniently located in a pleasant, quiet neighborhood. We loved everything about our stay there.....from the very pretty garden to the extensive breakfast to the resident tubby cat to the guest laptop access in the lobby to the morning newspapers. We hated to leave and would return in a heartbeat.

“Love that hotel!”

Absolutely wonderful hotel. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. the hotel itself was charming. We had a nice, large room. The breakfast room was charming and the cat was delightful.

Area recommendations
I would recommend the area of the hotel. It had wonderful restaurants and bars nearby. It was very simple to walk to the historic part of town as well as shopping. Public transportation was easily accessible and nearby. Could not have been better!!!

“Highly recommended!”

The Porta San Mamolo lived up to the high expectations I had, which were based on other reviewers' comments. In addition to the gracious welcome, loveliness of the room, beauty of the courtyards that overflowed with flowers, and bountiful breakfast buffet, one of the best restaurants in the city is just down the street! I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone contemplating a visit to Bologna!

“Roberto is a great host!”

This hotel was just the kind of place we were looking for in Bologna. Small, quite, with very friendly and helpful staff. The owner, Roberto, was a very pleasent and assisted with restaurant recommendations. He did not stear us wrong once. A perfect place for a couple of days in Bologna. It is close to the edge of the main part of town so is very accessible for day trips to Parma, Modena or the seaside.

Area recommendations
The market areas of Bologna are truly spectacular for all the foodies. A real treat.
Dining
Antichi Osteria Romagno served us one of the best meals I have had in Italy. For seafood it is second to none.

“Nice small hotel”

Very nice small hotel, rambling since it includes a couple of separate buildings connected by a garden and breakfast room. Location is on the south border of the old town of Bologna, but it's only a ten minute walk to the central piazza.

Dining
San Giovanni restaurant, highly rated by Trip Adviser, is down the block from this hotel. We went there at the suggestion of the hotel personnel and liked it a lot.

“Very nice B&B in Bologna”

We drove into Bologna. By car, this hotel was hard to find because of all the one way short streets and restricted driving areas. Also, we found that there is an extra 20 Euros to park your car. However, the people were nice and helpful. When looking for the hotel, we called them for instructions. They directed us to a gas station that was close to the hotel, then someone at the hotel came to retrieve and guide us to our destination. The hotel itself was very nice and clean and came with an excellent breakfast.
