“Needs an overhaul”

The room was warm and quiet. I slept ok which is all I needed but I wouldn't go back. The carpet was filthy, ceiling tiles broken, shower head encrusted with gunk, the tv didn't work, the radiator was stuck on the highest setting and wouldn't turn down. The whole room needed an overhaul. The mattress was so poor that it bent in half when I sat on the bed. Even the lift to my floor had rubbish left in the corner. The breakfast I'd paid for on Expedia hadn't registered so I had to sort this out at reception, but the staff were helpful and friendly. Altogether, it was cheap, convenient and served a purpose, but not up to standard and you can get a clean room in the central Travelodge for only ten pounds more.

“OK for a night but no longer!”

The hotel is just looking VERY tired and scruffy to be honest, is in need of a refurb. I most certainly would not pay the going rate as advertised in reception.

Area recommendations
I was born and have lived in Birmingham for nearly 50 years before relocating to the South coast. It is an OK area of Birmingham close to all of the amenities.

“Book for two nights but left after one - that bad!”

I've stayed in many hotels and can honestly say this was the worst. No hot water, the last customer's excrement left in the bathroom, the light flickered constantly and the shower didn't work (not the best when I'd just done the great birmingham run). The quality is remembered after the price is forgotten. Pay extra, stay somewhere else.

“Not Impressed”

This hotel is ok if you want somewhere cheap to stay overnight in Birmingham, the area is full of hotels so is very convienient to get into the centre by bus. The hotel could do with a good spring clean the carpets were grubby, but the room was ok. It was a single as i was in Birmingham to visit a concert . water was hot, decor of room was a bit dated as was the rest of the hotel. Breakfast was the worst I have had in over 30 years of staying in hotels As i said if you want somewhere cheap as just a place for an overnight stay in Birmingham but don't expect the Ritz as that is not what you will get.

Area recommendations
The Hagley Road area of Birmingham is excellent very near the centre lots of buses to get you into the centre

“One to avoid it possible”

I was in a hurry as I needed to be on the other side of birmingham in an hours time. Unfortunately there was someone before me checking in, who had a problem. I did not pay too much attention to the nature of it. When it was my turn, none of the paperwork had been prepared, so it took a little while to sort out. The layout of the hotel is very strange, with lots of stairs and corridors to negotiate. Most of which were not signed. When I got to my room I found that it had not been cleaned since the previous guest. So back to reception... No apology was offered. I don't think he believed me, but the unmade beds was a give away! While I was checking in someone was also complaining about the (advertised) broadband not working. After my room was sorted, and it had taken me a further ten minutes to find the room. I was too late to get to my appointment without an expensive taxi ride. Mistakes happen, the amount of mistakes I saw in my brief stay, and the lack of any apologies suggested that this hotel cares very little about customer service.

“value for money”

I use hotels just for sleeping in and on that basis I could not fault it. It was easy to find, clean, comfy. Bar was opened for us when we got back about 11-1130pm and staff were very friendly. Didn't get chance to eat as I was in B'ham for family meal and the 10am check out took me by surprise although it is clearly marked on key card.Room had phone, TV with only 5 channels, hairdryer and kettle with supplies for tea coffee. Also a radio alarm. Bargain for the price. On good bus route to/ from town centre.Menu of asian type food looked really good and I would try to eat there if I stayed again. Though £9 was a lot for breakfast but I didn't see it so can't comment really.Lots of free car parking at hotel.Area appears a bit dodgy in parts.

“Portland hotel, a definite NO! NO! but good for cheapness”

The travel experience was good because I am very familiar with Birmingham anyway so my trip to the hotel was just getaway for one night. After my stay I had a shopping day out in the city centre which was also really fun and it didn't take long to get there as the hotel is really close to the Bullring shopping centre. I would say this is the only plus I would give the hotel. Evreything else about the hotel discouraged me from staying there ever again!

Area recommendations
I would recommend staying on Hagly road where there is a variety of diifferent hotels to choose from - all within 5 minutes form the city centre. As I have said I would not recommend Portland hotel but there are other satisfactory hotels such as the Novotel, The Stratham, Quality hotel etc.
Dining
I would certainly recommend going TGI Fridays Restaurant on the Hagly road situated by all the different hotels. It is an American themed restaurant which just makes you feel as though you are in America. The staff do not use accents but the surroundings are entertaining and it's also a good restaurant for the family as well as for couples. The food is also very creative and the one thing I admire in a good restaurant is quick and friendly service. TGI Fridays has all of this and you would be missing out if you didn't try and go there if you wanted a fun packed evening dinner.

“Not impressed”

Hotel was a bit dingy. Had to change room because the first one had a phone that did not work and a toilet that did not flush. Reception were very good about this and very helpful. The second room then had un-flushed poo left floating in the toilet! By this point could not be bothered to change room again. When the room got cold had to ring reception to have the heating put on, which then made the room too hot (as we had no control of the temperature of the radiator in the room ourselves).

“mixed feelings”

The springs in the mattress all seemed to be broken and it was impossible to find a comfortable position to sleep. The heat in the building was on full so that even with the window open and the radiator off it was like a sauna. The dining room was so hot that it was almost impossible to eat. The breakfast was good and served promptly - I just wish that I had been able to do it justice. So we really had mixed feelings and think that if a bit more care was taken with the beds and the heat this could be a good deal for the business traveller.
