“Very cheap and helpful staff make up for basic rooms”
This was my second visit this year. Although the rooms are basic and the furnishings are somewhat old and dated the hotel is close to the city centre, has incredibly helpful and pleasant staff and is an interesting and special building. With views of the city and amazing stained glass roofs if you want somewhere that is very cheap its a pretty good bet.
“not too bad”
Not too bad considering how expensive hotels in Birmingham can be. Not too far from the centre but could be cleaner and quieter. You can literally hear your neighbours as they were partying in your room ...
“really great hotel”
staff friendly excellent location for city centre room a little small but clean and well maintained had really great stay would return
“Worse than a prison cell!”
This hotel was nothing like the pictures shown, I would never stay here again! Although staff were helpful.
“Don't Expect Anything at all, Except Very Cheap”
Tiny room, smelly loo, dysfunctional shower. Lot of noise from corridor and adjoining rooms where somebody was having fun all night. No security in the car park and it needs it in this run-down area! I wasn't asked to pay for the car park, just as well under the circumstances. No evening meals served, just snacks in the bar. This is a major minus as the area is poor and nearest pubs/eateries are in the gay quarter of Birmingham, not my choice. Buffet breakfast was of very low quality and not replenished - get down early or you go without milk, bread etc. Almost every table had dirty crocks, empty cereal cartons on it, stains from beverages, what a terrible mess. Breakfast things being cleared away before stated time breakfast finished! On my complaint, refunded cost of breakfast without a murmur, obviously used to complaints. Worst thing is the pictures used in the Expedia write-up which do not seem to relate to this hotel at all especially bedrooms. The external views look like they were taken with a fish-eye lens to give false impression of distance, and where are the photographed bedrooms???? Surprisingly bad experience as their sister hotel in Brompton West London is quite good (Ibis franchise) they have a lot to learn. Might have to go back if prices still rock-bottom though. Avoid if possible!!!!
“Not impressed at all. Very dissapointed. Probably one of the worst hotels I have stayed in.”

“Budget accomodations”
The hotel staff was very friendly and most professional. The room itself was neither large or too small and was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was in need of remodelling but plenty of hot water for showers and complimentary toiletries. My room looked out to the adjacent park and was quiet. The hotel is located in an industrial area just 15 minutes walk from the city centre. A fiver will take you to and from the train station via taxi.

“Run-down remnants of a great past”
Paragon Hotel is at best described as the run-down remnants of a great past. While many of classic canvasses adorning the walls may catch your attention, you would also not miss the tell-tale signs of poor maintenance. The room and the TV inside reminded me of Alice's wonderland. Diminutive forms. If you are big in size, the double bed may be too small for you. Clean bathrooms though. Full marks on that. There is ample parking but the lot certainly reminds of an abandoned warehouse. Avoid this hotel unless you are looking for just a bed to crash into.
“A good well-priced alternative to city centre hotels”
I've stayed at the Paragon several times. It's about 10-15 minutes walk from the city centre and admittedly it's adjacent to an industrial area which isn't very pretty. However it's a good hotel, very large and far more architecturally-interesting than most you'll encounter in the city. The rooms are a mix of adequate (decent-enough beds, decent shower, small, slightly old-fashioned TV etc) and the superior version which isn't much different but has an LCD TV on the wall and a fresh lick of paint with free in-room wi-fi. There's free wi-fi downstairs and masses of room to stretch out in. It's a huge but characterful hotel. Haven't tried the food but there's a chip shop almost next door. Being much cheaper than the competition means this hotel is well worth considering - as long as you don't mind the location.
