Room Amenities
Dining
Buenavistas Terrace - This light-filled room on the top floor has a glass roof, outdoor seating, and views of the Guggenheim. Buffet breakfast.
Café Metropol - An homage to the Bauhaus era, this café is decorated in black and white, with marble floors and silver-and-black-leather stools and chairs. Glass walls face the esplanade and the giant Puppy sculpture outside the museum. The café serves Basque and international cuisine, along with coffee and snacks
Beltz the Black - The style of this restaurant is minimalist, with a touch of Japanese influence. Light-wood floors complement black-wood tables and chairs and black-and-white plates by Villeroy & Boch. One wall is glass, another is slate. Open for dinner, the restaurant spotlights Basque and international cuisine. A tasting menu is also available.
Splash & Crash - This cocktail lounge has an unmistakable 1960s theme, with white-plastic chairs and stools with red cushions, slanting white columns with white benches, and armchairs in black-and-white leather. The silver floor and bar are inspired by the Guggenheim's titanium surface. Large Pop Art paintings by Mariscal add an additional splash of pizzazz.

“Great Location”
This is the second time we've stayed here, you can't beat the location and the hotel has some lovely little touches, e.g. choice of toiletries, little gift on the pillow, etc. Only negative is the carpet throughout the hotel is grubby and in dire need of cleaning and/or replacing. Everywhere is walkable - close to all attractions, bars and restaurants.
“Our stay in Bilbao”
This is a luxury hotel in a great location. The room was clean and large and the breakfast was great.
“Perfection”
The Hotel Gran Domine was perfect in every way. The location is amazing, and even if you don't have a room overlooking the Guggenheim, both the street level cafe and rooftop restaurant and terrace afford exceptional views of the museum, bridge and university across the "ria" (not a rio or river but picturesque, nonetheless). The food is terrific, too. The architecture and interior design of the hotel are wonderful, staff is extremely friendly and helpful, and the little touches (like the squeaky rubber designer dogs and cats left on your bed at turndown) are delightful -- not to mention the generous array of toiletries. The box includes standard shampoo, lotion, plus cologne, shaving, dental and sewing kits that are replenished daily as used. The only downside is slow Internet service, but it's free. There's a predictable array of cable channels. My son was delighted to find two all-soccer/football channels. There are ample eating options, fine shopping and public transit in the neighborhood (including a great light rail, the EuskoTren, and a Metro subway and comfortable coach bus service that takes you for daytrips to places such as Pamplona and San Sebastian at bargain rates). The EuskoTren Guggenheim station is about a 5-minute walk and takes you to such far-reaching locales as the old town and the San Mames soccer stadium. The Metro will get you up to the bayside communities. The Hotel San Domine is in the center of it all.
“Great design, great location”
Excellent hotel. The only fault I could have is that our room (the most basic, interior view) was almost too hot at night and the AC was noisy. This was in November, so it could be a real issue in the summer. Otherwise excellent. Friendly and helpful staff and beautifully designed.
“Excellent location, nice roof terrace, would stay again”
Excellent location for arrival on airport bus (1st stop) and it's about 100 paces to the back door of the hotel. The Guggenheim is immediately across the street. I visited in November when it is a lot quieter and not too many tourists. Overall impressions were a well maintained, clean and comfortable hotel. Nice comfy beds. There was band played in the bar area until 1pm on saturday night, but we couldn't hear the music in the room. We had the buffet breakfast on the roof terrace which has views of the Guggenheim and dinner in the restaurant. The food was excellent and the service was very good. There is a small sauna, small gym and very small steam room that fits two people. My stay was very pleasant.
“Best for Guggenheim”
Excellent stay. No issues whatsover.
“Best views of the Guggenheim Bilbau”
The Domine is directly across the street from the Guggenheim Bilbao. It is a luxury hotel with an ultra modern look. The rooms that face the museum are equipped with a radio that can be tuned to a classical music station; the radio also functions as a CD player and there is a library of disks in the room. The bathroom is separated from the bed area by a double-paned glass wall into which a miniiblind has been inserted that can be adjusted for privacy or for viewing the room or the view out the large windows. I did not see the rooms that do not face the museum but from the hotel layout they appear to look out into a vast atrium dominated by a gigantic rock sculpture that rises to the top story. The breakfast area is on the top flour with an even better view of the Guggenheim. The buffet spread is superb and was included in the room price. This space is also a bar, and at night becomes a top-drawer restaurant recently put under the global supervision of Michelin three-star chef Martin Berasatagui, whose eponymous restaurant is in Lasarte, near San Sebastian. There are other bars and cafes on the lobby level. The hotel is only a walk away from the Museo de Bellas Artes and the old city and so is well located. My one discontent was the low lighting in the bathrooms and the awkward placement of the magnifying mirror.
“Great hotel!”
Right across from the Guggenheim, with a view of the museum, what could be better than that? The staff was welcoming, the room was very nice, and we were very comfortable.
“Will DEFINITELY go back”
This hotel is beautiful and the service is wonderful, but what it really has going for it is location. It is directly across the street from the Guggenheim, so you head out the door and be in the museum in the time it takes to cross the street. We had a wonderful stay there and highly recommend this hotel to other travelers. We were there on vacation so can't review it from a business traveler's perspective, but the hotel did provide free wifi. I won't spoil the surprise, but the good-night gifts left on our pillows were whimsical and delightful.
“A perfect spot”
The hotel is across the street from the famous, huge, flower-covered dog sculpture and the entrance to the wonderful museum. It is also walking distance to the old town and the water-front promenade. Our room was spacious and luxurious. The terrace restaurant was superb. All staff were extremely helpful and pleasant. This hotel was the high point of our travels!
