“Grande Dame of Bilbao”

We were absolutely delighted with our choice of the Carlton hotel for a three day trip to Bilbao. The location on Plaza Moyua could not have been better for ease of travel to the airport as the bus stops almost outside the door. It was also walking distance to the old town which is full of restaurants and amazing tapas (pintxtos in Basque) bars. We walked to the Guggenheim and other places of interest. The area surrounding the hotel was full of lovely stores and numerous local cafes and restaurants - useful for breakfast if you do not want the hotel buffet breakfast. The hotel itself is beautiful. The sumptuous lobby and sweeping staircase reminds one of the grand old hotels of the past. Our bedroom was large, well-appointed, with a fully modernized bathroom. Some plumbing sounds from other rooms could be heard which might bother some people but it was no problem for us. Service, from the concierge to the cafe staff was impeccable. We would definitely choose this hotel again.

Must see
We loved so much about the lovely city of Bilbao that it is difficult to pinpoint one specific area. The highlight of our trip and our main purpose for visiting Bilbao, was the Guggenheim museum, because my husband is an Architect. The art displays pale in comparison to the amazing sculptural architecture of the building by Frank Gehry. The setting, the architectural brilliance of the exterior and interior spaces is actually breath taking, quite overwheming and it definitely exceeded our expectations. The old town is also worth a visit. It was terrific to see families, grandparents, children enjoying time together in the evening in the numerous little plazas and cafes. After the families go home, the tapas bars come alive with throngs of people spilling out on to the streets to chat, drink and enjoy the delectable tapas.

“Great location but no parking!”

This hotel is in an ideal location for shopping and great restaurants. Some wear on carpets in room but the hotel decor itself was lovely. Only issue was that we had to park and carry our luggage from three blocks away. The hotel has no parking.

“Excellent hotel in a beautiful city!”

I definitely recommend this hotel. The service was great and the rooms were very, very nice. It's centrally located, so perfect for getting around the city.

Definitely take a drive to the coast and visit San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. I

“Excellent hotel!”

Excellent hotel! The hotel is very central - the second stop for the airport bus, and room was lovely - beautiful bathroom. No sleep disruption at all even though hotel is located on a busy plaza. Our room overlooked a side road on the fifth floor. I would stay here again without hesitation. Bed was king size and very comfortable. Everything in the room worked.

“Fell in love with this hotel!”

The Hotel Carlton overlooks a large turnabout roadway with a park in the middle. It is very close to many shops and restaurants. Taxis are very easy to find right out the front door. The rooms are decorated differently, but the rooms that we had were perfect for us. The decor took our breath away when we entered for the first time. The room decor was a modern black and white with a wonderful white chaise lounger, comfortable bed, awesome VERY large tub, etched glass, plenty of storage, safe, separate toilet and shower areas, hair dryer, desk, and chandelier. We all wished we were staying longer and will look for this chain in future travels. The staff was able to communicate well enough in English for us and for the most part were friendly. The only negative we had was the wifi as you need a kit from the front desk and it was not compatible with our IPad or laptop and the instructions were in Spanish so we never were successful in using it. There is a business center area with 3 computers that we were able to use but hours are restricted.

“Excellent classic hotel”

The hotel is centrally located and an easy walk to most things in the city. It is located on a beautiful round about (rotunda) in the center of Bilbao. It is classically beautiful in an old world style. While we were given a smoking room, after requesting an non-smoking room, we found the room to be very large with a balcony that overlooked the street. We opened the french doors, the maids came and sprayed and the smell was not noticable at all. The other room our family had was newly renovated in a very classic ,but up-to-date style. Smaller than ours, but very nice. All in all, we found the hotel to be very nice, the staff very helpful and nice and a wonderful experience. We would definitely stay there again.

“Recommend”

Very good Hotel. Excelent location in front a place with metro station and near Gugenheim Museum (3 blocks). Price ok.

“dissappointing hotel”

The hotel is in a very good position but i am sad to say the rooms are not good at all,the bed was 2 small singles and very uncomfortable indeed. however i must say the breakfast was one of the best anywhere i have had in the world. overall i was dissappointed with this hotel and will not be staying there again.

“Nice hotel, large comfortable bedroom and good central location.”

Good hotel stop for a short city break. Did not use any of the faiclities in the hotel, so cannot comment on food and drink etc. The location and comfort was the best thing. Right on a roundabout next to a metro and all other services. We were surprised by the cost of parking in the basement garage, €24 for 1 day, but was effiicient and friendly.

“Probably Bilbao's best”

Excelent hotel to stay in Bilbao.

Area recommendations
Plaza Moyua is perfect, so I would advice to stay in any hotel near it, specialy the Carlton.
