“Beautiful view but no beach”

We picked this hotel for the reasonal cost and our efficiency unit was on a cliff overlooking the ocean. We were able to eat breakfast out on the porch with a beautiful view. Unfortunately, there was no beach at all, only stairs leading to where it once was. We had to take a bus down the road to the Elbow Beach to enjoy the Bermuda sand and sea.

When to go
It was cool and rainy the 4 days we were there, the week before Thanksgiving. Some places were closed or closing for the end of tourist season. I brought lots of summer outfits, but wore jeans and a jacket or sweater the whole time.

“Not Bad Overall”

The experience at Surfside was not bad overall. Room could use some work as far as upgrades but the overall cleanliness was okay and the staff is pleasent. I would definitely recommend for someone on a budget but the location doesn't have much around it except for Swizzle Southside, which had a great Rum Swizzle! Rum swizzles made the trip for me!

Area recommendations
Hamilton has a lot to offer but FYI many of the shops are closed on Sunday, pubs however are open!

“We will definitely go back!”

The hotel itself is ok. the location is wonderful. There was noone around during our stay which was eery at first, but also was nice. There is a beach, watch out for high tide. There is a pool. There still is no restaurant or bar. The busstop is at the end of the drive. Short ride to Hamilton. Swizzle inn is good alternative once in a while.

Area recommendations
The entire island is beautiful. You need to figure out the bus routes and times. Stay off the bus until 9 am and then get off by 2:30 when school gets out. Great suggestion, we rented a boat in somerset and really got to see beautiful beaches!

“Bermuda's Beauty”

The hotel was on a rock cliff and we woke up every morning to the beautiful blue ocean and the impeccable grounds of the Surf Side Beach Club. There isn't actually a beach on the property but it didn't dampen our experience because the Coral Beach or Elbow Beach was not too far down the road if you take the bus. It was so relaxing to have breakfast on our little back porch area right outside our room while the birds visited for any crumbs we may leave behind. We had a market close to the beach area to pick up breakfast foods because we never woke up early enough to make it to the breakfast meals that ended service before lunch. Ha! All in all, it was a great visit.

Area recommendations
Bermuda is a small island so you will probably be able to go to all things that are listed in its tourist brochures. The most fun we had included swimming in the ocean in March when Bermudians felt it was still winter time. We enjoyed dancing at Cairo in Hamilton. You will definitely need to visit the Swizzle Inn for the fabulous fare and more interesting characters there. Taking the ferries to visit all the stops like the Dockyard is worth the ride. It will definitely be a step up from the long bus ride. If you go to the Crystal Caves, make sure your tour guide is Ron. He's a hoot and he led the tour in the Fantasy Cave.
Getting around
If you get a pass for the time you are there, it will be very economical because it will get you on the buses and the ferries.

“worse vacation ever”

hotel was with outdated kitchenette. styrofoam surrounded the air conditioner unit. Balcony had mold on walls and railing bracket was falling apart. Front door rattled with the wind throughout the nite and day. no spa (filled in with cement) a 19" digital tv; only internet service was in the lobby a bit of a distance to walk. refrigerator door handle broken off; base of tub blackened. NO onsite restraunt . Lobby locked at 10pm. bus strike occurred and no transportation provided by hotel.

“It's hard to deside”

Well, after our Shuttelbus forgot to drop us off (it was BEELINE, and it took us 1h to get from the airport to the hotel) we arrived at SSBC. The first thing we saw was THE OCEAN!!!! amazing....The employes were VERY VERY NICE, the beach was amazing, our room was just ok. We had an upgrade, which means, we go a suite. That was very nice. we had a kitchen, TV, ocean view... The hotel is ok, if you travel with less money, its totally fine. after 4 days I was just falling in love with the surrounding. A bad thing is: You need to take the bus, taxi or an own car to get around there. BEcause there is nothing ypu can do around the hotel. BUT there is a busstop infront of the hotel, you just need 15-20min to get to the caity of HAmilton, where you can have dinner, buy things, ot take the ferry to other places.... And the end I have to say that it was a nice stay there, and not only because of the ocean. The beach is just 4min away. The ppl are very nice down there.... :))) I d love to go back soon

“A nice place to visit.”

From previous reviews, I had read that the hotel was run down, and some people complained of deplorable conditions, and trouble with the staff, while others were happy with their stay. I am among the latter, The hotel was obviously past its heyday, but was well maintained. My major complaint about the room was that the sliding screen door for the patio was falling apart, but this was a minor issue. The room was clean and comfortable, and I was satisfied with the daily maid service. The staff was helpful and friendly. Unfortunately, the onsite restaurant was still closed for renovation. This should be noted on the hotel's description. There was a nice bar/restaurant, The Swizzle Inn, that was a ten minute walk from the hotel. The food was tasty and plentiful. The hotel cannot be confused with one of the major hotel chains as far as luxury and service, but was clean and comfortable, which was just what I expected. I would definately go back.

Getting around
The bus service is very good. Buses run about every 15 minutes. Schedules are available in the lobby. I would recommend buying the 15 trip book of tickets, as it is much cheaper and easier to use, as exact fare in coins is required on the buses. If you are not sure of your destination, just ask the driver to call it out upon arrival.

“Not full service, but a great hotel!”

I was a little worried with previous posts, but after having spent the weekend at Surf Side, I felt compelled to write about it. At check-in, we were met by a friendly front desk who quickly processed us and directed us to our cottage. True, the facilities are not new, but this is also not the most expensive hotel on the island either. The compound was very peaceful and only crickets & waves could be heard at night. As the hotel is situated on a cliff, a short walk is required to reach the beach. It's not private, but of the six times we swam, I think we only saw a total of 10 people! Again, it's on a cliff, so stairs are involved, and, depending on the weather & as mentioned on their website, the beach may be awesome or non-existent (we experienced both as a tropical storm was near on our first day). If you need a better/easier accessible beach, the bus stop is in front of the hotel on the main road. The hotel does have a pool/sitting area, but no bar/restaurant. The ocean called us over the pool, and the Swizzle Inn, a restaurant/bar down the street, took care of our entertainment needs. If you don't want to venture far after a long day, the cabins have a full kitchen, so stock up on groceries and make your own drinks to save a little. Beware though! Wrap all food not to invite bugs from outside! Overall, we had a great time! We were not looking to be fully catered to. Just a place to unwind, relax, and enjoy the beauty of the island. We would definitely come back again.

Getting around
Hotel is located in a quiet section of the island. The bus and ferry systems are a cheap and fun way to explore though. Tokens are available at the front desk and the bus stop is right in front of the hotel. By bus, you can reach the Dockyard in 30 or so minutes, Hamilton in less than 10 minutes, and St. George's in about 40 minutes.
Dining
The Swizzle Inn, located just down the street, has great drinks/food and is only a 10 minute walk from the hotel.
