“Great place to stay”
I have used this hotel 8 times now and every time I am delighted. The staff are charming and very helpful, speaking excellent English. The staff turnover is minimal and the same staff are there year after year. The rooms are variable but very good. The bar is comfy and pleasant. The breakfast is the best you will ever get! The hotel is a short walk from Warsaw Street Station, rather grotty-looking when you exit the platform but very safe and extremely handy for both the city centre (6 mins) and the budget airport (35 mins without changing on the S9). I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a reasonably-priced, well-located and good value hotel in this great city.
“will certainly go back”
Ideal position ,easily reached from airport, and a quick trip on into the centre of Berlin to see all the sites. After a long day site seeing you can return to the hotel and then walk one block, 5mins, to a multitude of pavement cafes offering ecellent food at reasonable prices. Hotel is easy 10min. stroll to the station and as seen in other reveiws, there is infact no street beggars around the immediate area of the hotel and restaurants. The only beggars seen were outside the station, as is the case with most stations in Berlin, but were of no concern and caused no nuisance. We couldnt have chosen a better position and the breakfasts offered a fantastic choice, setting us up for a good day.
“Excellent,Clean And Comfortable Hotel”
Situated in the east of Berlin, the hotel is only a two minute walk to Warschauer Strasse. On this main thoroughfare runs a tramline and many shops stand on either side. Also, the combined S-Bahn and U-Bahn station is only a short five to ten minute walk from the hotel;handy if you are coming from Schoenfeld Airport or going into town.Further back and running parallel is Simon Dach Strasse which offers many varities of restaurants that offer reasonably priced dishes of large proportions. The hotel hosts a good and reasonably priced restaurant that serves good local fayre. The hotel staff are very accommodating and were particuarly helpful especially when my girlfriend was unwell.Excellent
“Great Value”
The hotel staff are very welcoming and the breakfast is outstanding. Most staff speak English so you should not have any difficulty in being understood. There are a variety of international restaurants and bars within 400 yards of the hotel in Simon Dach Strasse. However, central Berlin is only 10 minutes away on the S Bahn. This hotel is a little gem and a great base to explore berlin.
“Great Hotel, not the best surroundings”
Although Hotel was not very central, train station was in easy walking distance & there was never a long wait for trains to arrive, which got you to destination in good time. Hotel was a very good choice with rooms comfortable, staff very polite & breakfast excellent with a wide range of choice & very plentiful, the only minus point really was the surrounding area is probably not the best although it would not stop me using this hotel if I was to visit Berlin again, hotel is also situated in a quiet side street so noise not a problem. There are some good reasonably priced restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. In summary, I would recommend this hotel for a good base to visit Berlin & would not let the surrounding area, although not the prettiest put me off
“Excellent Berlin Break”
The hotel was exactly what we wanted. Excelllent food.
“Excellent value, good location, superb inclusive buffet breakfast”
We spend 7 days at the Upstaalsboom at the end of July 2011 for a family holiday (husband, wife & 2 adult sons). This was our own 2nd visit & it lived up to our expectations from the 1st visit 2 yrs ago. Simply decorated, clean, double room at front of hotel on 2nd floor with comfortable, very large bed, 2 seater sofa & easy chair. Good sized bathroom with excellent shower & ample towels. No noise at all at night. Very useful room safe at no extra cost. Magnificant, unlimited buffet breakfast! Extensive range of cold meats, cheeses, continental pickles, fresh fruits, juices, breads, pastries, cereals, plus bacon, scrambled egg & excellent coffee & tea. All constantly replenished. We have never seen such an impressive breakfast display. Excellent, effecient, obliging staff both at reception & those cleaning the rooms. About a 10 min walk to the nearest , U & S Bahn station (Warschauer Strasse) giving easy acess to all areas of Berlin especially the 'central' area. 3 stops to Alexanderplatz or you could travel direct to Potsdam from this station. Hotel does not have air conditioning but supplies effective temperature adjustable fans in each room. We had no problem with the room temperature. We cannot really fault this hotel. We enjoyed our stay as did our 2 sons (each had their own double room ) & would return to Berlin using it as our base again. Our double room rate with the free inclusive breakfast was great value for money!
“Excellent Hotel”
We've just got back from a winter weekend in Berlin. I was advised to book in Friedricshein by a friend who told me that it was a bit cooler and trendy than the commercial centre of town. I wont bore you with too much detail, though I can assure you that this hotel: - is brand new - serves the most fantastic breakfast in 2 restaurants (one of the largest selections I've ever seen) - has very helpful and attentive staff - is very clean -has a lovely sauna, but a tiny pointless gym - is about a 45 minute walk or 6 Euro cab to the centre (sky tower) - 5 minutes walk to the quirky friendly bars and restaurants of Friedricshein. -Is well connected by main tram lines. This place is 100% reccomeded and would be nice in the summer as there is a lovely roof terrace.
“Hotel Upstalsboom”
The hotel was very good but because it is new the ceilings are too low as is the lighting in the rooms. The feeling is of opression. Wonderful breakfast and friendly staff on the whole. I would thoroughly recommend it.
“Could Do Better”
When we arrived at our hotel and after a fairly long journey from the airport we were told by the reception staff that our room was not ready and we could not check-in until 3pm.Having booked in advance we were both quite annoyed but there was no eagerness from the reception staff to hurry the in-house housekeeping staff to prepare our room. After about 45 minutes hanging around reception my wife approached the reception and explained to them that we had booked in advance and could they do something to hurry their staff to enable us to check in and go to our room and only then were we able to check-in and proceed to our room dragging our suitcase with us because there were no signs of any help from the staff and indeed no porters or conceirges to be found. Our Room was situated on the 1st Floor (No 153) and we found it quite easily but had to let ourselves in and this being a so called "Comfort Room" found it to be extremely stuffy no air-conditioning, no face flannels, no toilet soap and no shampoo in the bathroom just the basics like 2 Hand Towels,2 Bath Towels and 2 Liquid Soap Dispensers.so we asked the in-housekeeping if there were any shampoo or toilet soap or face flannels but because they only spoke in German shook their heads in amazement.finally no clock on any of the room walls in order to tell us the time but other than this the room was very comfortable with minibar complimentary water T.V and Telephone and a Book listing all hotel services.

Area:
Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany: Formerly in East Berlin, the arrival of MTV Europe and other media companies has enhanced Friedrichshains reputation as one of the liveliest, most fashionable areas in Berlin. Its pubs, clubs and cafés centre round Boxhagener Platz and Simon-Dach-Strasse, and a long section of the Berlin Wall remains on Mühlen Strasse. Karl-Marx-Allee is a testament to Stalinist architecture; the Volkspark Friedrichshain houses the Brothers Grimm Fountain.
