“Excellent Hotel. Friendly Staff.”
Stayed 2 nights. Nice room with balcony offering superb views over lake. Staff polite and friendly. A little noisy with the windows open due to M4 motorway being close. Do not remember any Air Con but it was in December. Did not dine in Restaurant but Breakfast and Room Service A1. Very rural location but only 10 mins from Junction 12 of M4. Large free car park. Would go again.
“NIce hotel, lovely views, but no good without a car”
The hotel was very nice and all rooms have a view over the lake. We had issues finding it as it's name had changed since we booked it but some road signs had the original name and some had the new one. Very confusing! We stayed here to attend Reading Festival, as did most of the other guests. Despite this it was very quiet. We were not driving to the festival and this was a problem. I asked the receptionist for a taxi number but she booked a cab for us and we were charged £20! A rip off. A taxi with a meter charged £17.20 from the town centre to the hotel after midnight. On the 2nd day we found that if we walked up the road and through a short cut (thanks iphone!) we could get to a bus stop in 20 mins. The bus into town is only £2 each! In summary, the hotel was very good, especially considering we got a really good deal. Don't stay here if you are not intending to drive anywhere.
“Hidden Gem”
The hotel is in a lovely setting and looks on to a large lake. Rooms facing the lake have a small balcony but In November it was far too cold to spend time out there. Did have some difficulty finding the hotel at it is off the beaten track. I missed the entrance sompletely in the dark and couldn't turn round. Room was great - everything you would expect - nothing at fault at all. Bathroom could have been better; looked a bit tired and the tiles along the bath had cracks. Just needs a bit of upgrading. Ate in the bar and would have liked more choice. Ordered a Ploughman's salad which wasn't very imaginative - few pieces of cheese, half an apple, few sticks of celery, pickled onion and a bit of lettuce. Good selection of wines.
“Worthy of consideration”
The staff were friendly, helpful and professional. The room was ready, clean and comfortable. The main drawback for us was the cost of meals. Despite a discount the cost of a continental breakfast was exceptionally high and we decided to take all our meals elsewhere. Despite a remote location, which has particular attractions given the lakes, the hotel is well positioned for the Reading and Newbury area, and excellent as a meeting place for family and friends south west of London.
“Nearly Excellent”
The hotel was very good. The only drawback was the condition of the outside. The balcony over the lakewas great but not clean. Just needs a bit of a spruce up it make it very good for the money.
