“Good hotel. No frills.”
I've seen lots of awful reviews for this hotel - I almost booked to go somewhere else. However, the price an location persuaded me otherwise. I wanted somewhere in the centre of Newbury so that I would not require a taxi to get back after my night out. I only wanted somewhere to sleep - not a palace. That's what I got. It may need a bit of love here and there but the quality of the room was good, the bathroom enormous, the bed comfortable and there was the usual shower gel, trouser press (does anyone really use those?), tea (a selection), coffee and hot chocolate. Staff at the front desk were friendly and efficient. I'd certainly recommend staying here.
“Faulty Towers Still Exists”
Having perused the dinner menu on arrival and being told the times of service, we descended at 7.45 p.m. to be told the restaurant was closed, and this on a Friday night! I think the hotel would benefit from one of those 'makeover' programs. A lovely old building which needs a total upgrade and re-furb together with really positive marketing to bring it up to date.
“Cheap and in the town centre”
The Chequers is notorious for being cheap and nasty amoung Newburians, and the fact that it is stupidly cheap is the only reason I go back there for weekend visits to the UK. Believe me, if I had the money, I would stay at the Queens, or similar. The hotel decor is in a terrible condition throughout which is a shame, as the building is rather impressive. The staff are polite, although on one of my return trips, I paid for a drink at the bar with cash, and they tried to charge it to my bill when I checked out! The hotel is fine for a short stay if you aren't too precious, or expect 5* treatment. It's perfect for the town centre, and has parking.
“spot on”
went to newbury for a friends wedding, stayed here as it was the cheapest option. smack bang in the centre and cost only 5gbp to get a taxi from the station
“Shabby but cheap”
The floor in this hotel squeaks like you wouldn't believe - the neighbours walking past the corridor woke us up in the morning. It was a huge room and bathroom, but shabby. Cheap, though, and not too bad a location.
“Good location but outdated and untidy”
Hotel is in great location for Newbury town centre but very outdated and untidy in terms of decor. Room was spacious, clean and comfortable and served as a base for us. Car park had plenty of spaces and is free.
