“Great Hotel, and location”

This hotel is in a great location in down town Bergen. The room was clean and well kept. The bathroom was equally spotless and had great water pressure (unlike in the US where they reduce water flow)! The breakfast was good and a large spread as well, with something to suit everyone. The dining restaurant is really nice. The staff was really friendly and accommodating. The only downside is parking. Of course anywhere you are in downtown Bergen there is limited and costly parking which is not really a "hotel issue". This is true everywhere downtown. I would stay there again.

Getting there
Flying right into Bergen is ideal. Close to downtown. You can also take the rail from Oslo and see much more of the landscape.
Getting around
I rented a car and drove around. I did get a lot of tips and advice. I found it much more difficult than I thought because of small things like not turning right on red, taxi/bus lanes (are everywhere downtown and NO ONE dares to drive in them) and Buses have the right of way! Watch out!. Without having tips and friends it would have been worse for a first time Norway driver. The roads are bumpy in places but well maintained if that makes sense. The signs are good. If I did this again in another country, I would invest in public transportation as a first time solo visitor.
What to pack
Rain Gear. Everyone wears rain boots almost all the time. It sometimes rains for days on end depending on what time of the year you go in. In the Summer, it is beautiful and nice and much more crowded. The night life near the water is where to go. During the off season, it's not as crowded and during this time of the year (September) it's a constant 65 degrees (18 celsius) with some warmer days. Beautiful hiking and walking about weather (I think). I mainly packed an insulated jacket and normal clothes and I think I was right on the money. I would change it next time by having more water proof shoes available - but it wasn't a big issue for me.
Must see
1) Mount Floyen and the Funicular (A Rail Tram) that takes you up the mountain. It's about 5 minutes up. It's incredible, incredibly steep, and fun. If you don't like heights, don't go!! You can eat at the top or just hang out and if you like - walk down thru a winding road along the mountain side. Many people walk down as well as up!! It will take about an hour to get down by walking. 2) Mount Ulriken and it's Funicular (Tram). This is a suspended tram, is less than 10 min up. This also is a steep incline and suspended by cable so if you don't like heights, then this is not for you. There is a restaurant at the top and beautiful scenery. You can hike down this one as well but it's much longer. 3) Rosenkrantz Tower - Castle. Go see it! There are tours, look for times.
Dining
Bryggeloftet & Stuene Restaurant - Food was good and service too. I would go back. This is near the water. Big Horn Steakhouse is expense and just average food. I would not go back. A lot of the shops and bakeries are good. Most of them make their own break as it seems an they are worth going too.
Other
Norway is switching from Credit cards that we use in the use to Credit Card / Smart Cards. These are credit cards that have a chip in them. They are NOT popular in the us, but stores like Best Buy are starting to install the readers at their registers. Eventually you will not be able to swipe a regular Visa card at most places. (This goes for Debit cards too). I did not bring cash or travelers checks as most places don't use them much. Debit cards can be used at an ATM and places take them even restaurants. But remember, soon (after Jan 1 2012 ?) all credit and debit cards must have the chip in them! Look into it. (SOme people call them smart cards in the US).

“Good relative to peers”

Bergen is a tough place to find a nice hotel. The Marin has a great location, large rooms by European standards, and is in great condition. The front desk is unfortunately beholden to the needs of bus tour operators, so don't expect to be given a room on the first day in Europe after an overnight flight until 3:00 PM - we were bounced twice. The breakfast is adequate but by no means interesting. Bergen is a tough town to find a good hotel in. After several trips, this one is the best we've had.

“Well traveled”

The hotel was just ok if the rate was realistic, I paid a ridiculous per night rate and really didn't feel there was a perceived value. It really is pretty tired...

“nice hotel, but beware of noisy side”

nice hotel ideally located. one side does front on a street with a nightclub, and there is a noise problem when the nightclub is open. supposedly only sat. night, but there must have been a special event on the night we were there. the next day the hotel did move us to a better quieter room without a problem. Breakfast buffet a bit of a free-for-all.

Getting there

“first marin hotel vlakbij haven”

Area recommendations
Centrum, mooi gebied, leuke winkels.
Getting there
Ideaal met het vliegtuig
Getting around
What to pack
Paraplu ivm veel en vaak regen. Goede wandelschoenen.
