I very much enjoyed staying at the Pousado do Arcanjo. The property is attractive and has a lot of nice traditional touches. The staff was friendly and willing to fight through their imperfect English (and my worse Portuguese). My room was large, as was the bathroom. The mini-bar was stocked with some interesting local items. WiFi worked great. The bed and bedding were a little dated, but not a problem. I liked the location of the hotel, an easy walk from the bus station--and importantly in Ouro Preto--with little change in elevation if you are carrying your bag. The hotel offers a complimentary van to the bus station or town center, but I never used it. The walk to the center takes about 15 minutes and is downhill. (The uphill walk back wasn't too taxing, I found, although Ouro Preto has some VERY steep climbs and descents). Breakfast at the hotel was great. My favorite thing about the hotel is the complimentary afternoon tea, served from 5 pm to 7 pm, replete with tasty cakes and snacks. A nice break before dinner after a long day of touring up and down the local hillsides.
We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights for the World Cup and it was a good choice. The hotels was completely sold out (obviously) but we didnt see any degradation in the level of service. Rooms are decent and clean, certainly not fancy by any means but just fine. Nice, queen bed, good sheets, pillows. Decent choices available at the mini-bar. A little noisy outside at night but not a surprise based on the events going on.
Check in/check out was painless and we didnt have any huge lines. Breakfast was included and was a decent sit down with hot and cold choices. Lobby was fine and they had a bar for drinks at night.
The neighborhood was nice in general, with some coffee shops, restaurants nearby. We walked around and felt perfectly safe.
This hotel is well situated. For those travelers who like to explore beyond the beach, this hotel sits right accross the subway station! Perhaps a bit overprice -as we visited right when the rio's carnival was at full swing- the room, the hotel, the staff and the additional perks did the trick fornus (additional perks included breakfast and free wifi access). Thisn hotel is a keeper.
