"THE Hotel for the alternative crowd"
I love this hotel, even with all the quirks and unexpected things that a more modern hotel would have overcome, like faster elevators, slightly larger rooms, perhaps a quieter surrounding. But all of these things are very minor when taken in context. Everything is clean and spotless, the decoration and artwork are very interesting and alternative, and the many, many little thoughtful touches are amazing. By way of examples: including an "intimacy kit" as a purchasable item in the room, including a spirituality menu where you dial up room service and they'll bring you a copy of virtually any of the major spiritual texts (Bible, Koran, Scientology, Bagavat Gita, Book of Mormon, etc.). As a non-believer I would have liked an option for that too (Origin of Species? Walden? God is Not Great?) but most people don't rent hotel rooms to read books (sorry Gideon). The location is fabulous; walking distance to everything, including and especially Pike's Market. The rooms are smallish, but since I'm only there to sleep and brush my teeth, within reason, room size is irrelevant. The air conditioner is a bit noisy, but the easier thing to do is crack open the window for a bit of fresh air at night. The restaurant downstairs is amazing, and the dinner was top notch, as is the wine list. Don't miss the corned beef for breakfast, really, really fabulous and memorable, the best I've ever had. In short, book this hotel, you will not regret it. It exudes funk in a sophisticated way
