We stayed for three nights at the Locanda di San Martino, and loved every minute of it. The hotel was easy to find, even though it is located in the old Sassi. After we checked in we drove the rental car back down the road and around the corner to a free car park, where it sat for the duration.
The Hotel is in a great location, all of the Sassi is within walking (and climbing stairs distance). Our room was private, spacious, clean with good air con. after you find the stairs you wont even bother with the hotel lift.
For two days we explored the Sassi, we had a 2 hour English speaking tour guide with was a great orientation to the Sassi, and after that we just explored on our own. Getting lost in the alleyways is part of the experience.
Each afternoon we would visit the Thermal pool that is part of the hotel. The ten euro charge is well worth the experience of the Saunas, spa, and the beautiful blue underground thermal pool. what an experience !
The staff at reception are friendly, the breakfast is good (we even had a piano player each morning).
We were 100% glad we chose this hotel.
Phone the hotel to get directions as your sat nav may take you to completely the wrong place. But when you arrive it is fabulous. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. We were upgraded to a junior suite at check-in. The hotel is steeped in history but has been stylishly renovated. The view from our terrace was beautiful. Breakfast is fantastic. The hotel is centrally located. We booked a guide at reception and would recommend that. We could not fault anything.
We stayed 3 nights at this hotel and had a very pleasent stay. Loved Matera! The room was spacious and comfortable and the buffet breakfast had a good selection. There was ample room for parking right on the premises. The hotel is located about 2 kilometers out of town-not convenient if you don't have a car. I think there is a nearby bus stop but not sure how often it runs.
My wife and I stayed here for our last night while touring Puglia, We were not disappointed. The staff were very helpful and all spoke superb English. We were shown to our room after a tour of the dining area and a briefing on the history of the hotel. The room, sorry, cave, was beautifully prepared and all the candles lit when we walked in. The photographs really do represent the room experience. Taking a bath is a surreal experience. A very comfortable cave indeed but then it was air conditioned (very subtly installed) and even had underfloor heating in the bathroom area. The bed was very comfortable and we had very peaceful nights sleep.
The following morning we enjoyed an interesting buffet breakfast facilitated by a multi lingual waiter. We very much enjoyed our stay.

Very Nice Hotel, nothing fancy, but very clean, lovely staff, excellent food and the beach, though rocky as all the beaches on the coast here, was gorgeous! We had a wonderful stay and would definitely recommend the hotel!

"Fascinating hotel with rooms nestled in the rock."
Lovely room in an unusual but very pleasing hotel with a magnificent location with great views across the gorge. The room was large, well-furnished and very comfortable although it would have benefitted from a bit more air conditioning. The food in the restaurant was very good and the staff very courteous. Breakfast was good too.
