“Very Nice Hotel”

Hotel - I was very impressed by how clean the hotel was - especially the room. Hotel was also decorated to a high standard. Location - About a 25-30 min walk to La Rambla, but there are lots of shops along the way so more of a slow walk. Breakfast - They offer breakfast - cold and hot items - not the greatest range of food to be honest. Overall I would reccommed this hotel, as it is clean and in a decent location.

“A weekday only hotel!”

The Condado is a rather pleasant hotel clean and well maintained with a good lounge. but nowhere need the metro and a lengthy walk into town. Rooms are clean, beds a little hard but and I mean BUT, on a Friday and Saturday hundreds of revellers and low frequency night club boom -boom permeates all the bedroom walls on the main frontage until nearly 6.30 am. So, unless you have no low-frequency hearing watch out! Oh! when using the lifts the up/down buttons fail to summon the.....stood for ages until someone advised pushing a white button incribed 'LL'. So, a good hotel for weekday stays only.

“If you are into surly”

I would not recommend this hotel and rated it a "2" overall. . We arrived around midnight and were greeted by the most surly front desk guy that I ever experienced, and I travel almost every week. He didn't greet us at all and basically threw us the keys. When the door wouldn't open, I went back down to the front desk to face Mr. Surly, but luckily he had a younger assistant who gladly helped us and was very nice. He became our friend throughout the stay. When we finally got into our room we discovered that there was only one very small bar of soap and no glasses to drink from. I now made my third visit to Mr. Surly and got the missing items. In the morning, I complained about our reception to the Manager and he apologized. He thought that it might be a language issue. Unfortunately, I don't agree as Mr. Surly attempted no greeting at all. I suggested to the Manager that perhaps he could find another position for this individual outside the hospitality industry. Our other disappointment was the hotel's location. If you plan on using the Metro be prepared to walk 15 minutes to the nearest station (Diagonal). Since my wife and I like to walk and the weather was nice during our 5 day visit, it wasn't a problem in the morning. However, it's a long walk at the end of a busy day of sightseeing. All that said, the room we had was well kept, clean and spacious. I just wish the hotel had a better staff, wasn't so cheap with the the bathroom supplies and was closer to the Metro

“nice for the money”

The staff was friendly and spoke enough english to communicate with us. The room was very clean and the bathroom was very nice. It was a decent location, just not too close to the Metro (subway). A short walk in a couple of directions put you among some great restaraunts and shopping. This hotel is surrounded by several clubs opening about 11pm, but was not bothered by the noise while in the room. Overall a great experience, but next time would try for a hotel in a different area.

Area recommendations
There are several nice areas within Barcelona, all easily accessible by the Metro. My personal favorites were Barceloneta (for the beach and seafood), Gracia (a very laid back neighborhood with many small resturants), and L'Eixample (a very clean area with great shopping and food/bar hopping).

“Quality and comfort a bit off the beaten trail”

Our main disappointment was that the rooms we booked were supposed to have been separated by a small sitting room. I brought this to management's attention as soon as we arrived (my spouse in one and the two adult children in the other). They showed me the Spanish language description which said there was no such sitting room. However, what actually separated us was a small entry-way/foyer the size of a closet (a hallway within a hallway). The room we had 504 and 505 was supposed to have the sitting room. In the end, great staff. Very professional. 10 minute walk to Diagonal Metro station. There are small refrigerators in the hallways (not in the room) that are supposed to be packed with bottled water, and they mostly were not, but at the front desk, one could get bottled water (gratis) and ice. Nice yoga club and gym across the street, next to super market. All in all, a good find and highly recommended.

“Great place to stay in Barcelona”

We stayed here for two nights post-cruise. The hotel is in a good location but not in the busiest part of the city. We were able to use the Hop On Hop Off Bus that was a quick walk from the hotel. That allowed us to explore the city and then be dropped off at the end of the day without having to worry about paying cab fare. There is a market across the street that sold food, etc. The staff was very helpful and the room was a good size and very clean and comfortable. I would recommend this hotel and would not hesitate to stay here again.

“A Very Pleasant Hotel”

Hotel Condado proved comfortable, clean and quiet despite being opposite a nightclub. The triple glazing meant that we were not disturbed by the music or the clubbers but it was interesting to watch them through the bedroom window. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful and spoke good English. They were also obviously used to advising on the sites of Barcelona and how to reach them. More information leaflets in the lounge area would have been helpful as would tea and coffee facilities in room, though the latter seems to be a failing of most European hotels compared with the UK Breakfast at 12 euros a head seemed expensive so we took the advice of others on this site and found local cafes very reasonable. Moncho's, bear left from the hotel and follow the road round the corner for about 50 metres, does good coffee and a croissant or pastry for 1.90 euros which is a big saving. It also does good tapas and full meals as do many of the other bars in the area. Despite the nightclub, the hotel is in a quiet area just off the Avenue Diagonal but within easy reach of the Old Town. Two stops along Av Diagonal by bus is the Diagonal Metro from where you can get to most places easily.

Getting around
As Barcelona has an integrated transport system the same ticket works on buses, metro and tram. Buses and metro trains are modern and frequent which makes getting about easy. The metro system is extensive with eight lines. Buy a card for 10 journeys for 7.50 euros - each journey can last up to an hour and a quarter with as many changes between bus, tram or metro as you want. Also worth considering are the open top buses which take in all the major tourist sites and you can hop on and off as many times as you like. We thought 23 euros for the day pass a little expensive but the 30 euro two day pass seemed reasonable value especially as it included discounts on entry to some sites.
What to pack
DK Eyewitness Travel - Top 10 Barcelona. Pocket sized and full of information. All you need to get the best from a visit.
Must see
Sagrada Familia, obviously, but get there before opening if you want to see the inside, the queues are horrendous. Barcelona Cathedral, Parc de la Ciutadella with the Cascade Fountain, Parc Guell and Montjuic with Castell Montjuic are all well worth a visit and are all free. Palau de la Musica Catalana is fantastic for its outrageous decor and Pablo Espanyol is fun for the buildings and the craft-shops. Do visit Mercat de la Boqueria, off La Rambla, to drool at the quality and variety of the produce.
Dining
Restaurants don't start serving meals until 8pm though in most tapas is available throughout the day. We found tapas to be the best value as well as allowing us to enjoy a large variety of dishes.

“Good value”

We had a room waiting for us even though we arrived before noon. The next day we moved to a room with a bathtub. Two days later my husband decided he wanted a balcony so we moved again for another 3 days. The management was very helpful and unflustered by all this. All the rooms were spotless and the only thing that I noticed was a slight discoloration in the grout around one of the tubs. It was very minor. I do recommend asking for a room that faces the back courtyard because of street noise if you want to open windows facing Aribau. However when the windows are closed the rooms are very quiet. There is a second set of windows with a wide airspace (not just double-paned windows) that really cut out the noise from the street. The walk to the metro is short and pleasant. We walked from the Gothic Quarter to the hotel twice. It was not that long with lots of wonderful architecture to entertain us. Taxi rides from Plaza Catalunya were around 7.5 euros. The taxi to the airport was 28 euros. You can't beat this hotel as a good value. I did find the bed to be a little on the firm side but I travel with foam sheeting so it wasn't a problem.

“Would definitely stay here again, good value”

The Condado was a stylish, clean, mid-range hotel, just perfect for us - parents with two young-adult daughters. Location was very central, close to many different bus routes, could get down to Rambla and Gothic quarter, Montjuic area, Sagrada Familia, Parc Guell and Pg Gracia where the other Gaudi buildings are - all within 15-20 minutes by bus. Close to Via Diagonal, a major avenue, very beautiful, with many shops. We stayed for ten days. We had adjoining rooms, which was very convenient. The hotel did not have room service nor bellhops, which kept the cost reasonable. Breakfast buffet, although good, was a bit pricey for the four of us at 12 Euros each, so we opted for breakfast out instead. There are many restaurants and cafes nearby, two grocery stores (one right across the street) which we used for buying drinks, fruit and snacks. The rooms do not have a fridge. Apparently, there is a suite on the top floor, with a kitchen; I would consider that for a longer stay. If you are a light sleeper, I would ask for a room at the back rather than the front facing the street. There were times when we could hear voices of people leaving a restaurant or club across the street very late at night - we were there over new year's. Other than those nights, it was quiet. Absolutely no complaints about the rooms or the service. It was very good value.

Area recommendations
You cannot go wrong anywhere in Barcelona. It's a beautiful and well-planned city. There is no bad area. Highlights are the Rambla, a beautiful pedestrian walkway; the Gothic quarter, a labyrinth of medieval lanes and buildings; Barcelonetta, charming old neighbourhood near the beach; the Parc de la Ciutadella - a large city park just east of the old city; Parc Guell, the Gaudi-designed park; Mount Tibidabo (great views) and Montjuic (Miro museum and great views). The whole city is incredibly beautiful and very walkable. Lots of public art and public spaces. Transit is reliable; the buses are clean and on time.
When to go
We went during the Xmas holidays and the weather was mild - 10 -15 degree Celsius each day. Occasional drizzle, not much though. The main avenues were festooned with colourful lighting panels which were very festive.
Getting there
Air France was good, Delta not so much (we went out on AF and returned on Delta). The food was terrible on Delta and they didn't have back-of-seat individual viewing screens. Air France was cleaner, better food and better service. Delta gave out tiny bags of peanuts as the first snack - on a plane! I hope no one was allergic. Hard to avoid the stuff on a closed air plane.
Getting around
Many bus routes to choose from. The bus stops have electronic displays that indicate the waiting time for each bus route that stops there. It was always accurate and the buses are clean and comfortable.
Must see
Font Magica - the magic fountain at the top of Montjuic - the water fountain is choreographed with music, and beautifully lit. A special treat at night when it's dark. On the half hour from 7:00 to 9:00 - not sure if it's every day or just weekends.
Dining
Many, many restaurants. We found that eating our main meal at lunch saved $. Most restaurants have a lunch menu of the day for 10 - 15 Euros, which included three courses and wine. Good value and the food was very good everywhere. There are also many tapas places, which are small portions so you can sample many things. The Mercat de la Boqueria is a semi-outdoor market, with many vendors of all kinds of food.

“Cosy hotel in a nice neighbourhood”

My stay at Condado was comfortable and enjoyable. While the room was small it was perfect size for just me. The staff were always friendly and my room was clean. It was a good 30 minute walk to the centre of Barcelona which I did not mind at all. I was told that buses were near by but I love to walk when possible. The free internet in the foyer was handy as well as I was not travelling with my laptop.
