“Just don't expect "service with a smile"”
We chose this hotel after spending several hours researching hotels in downtown Barcelona along La Gran Via. After countless hours of looking at hotel rates, locations, pictures and customer reviews, we selected the Caledonian on La Gran Via and only several blocks from La Rambla and the Marina. The price for a mid-October 4-night stay was reasonable. The rooms are nicely appointed and clean. What also amazed us was how quiet the room was even though our room was in the front overlooking one of the busiest avenues in the city (Thanks to well-engineered sound-proofing technology in the walls and balcony doors.) One recommendation is that you skip the continental breakfast ($10/per) and go to one of the many cafes within minutes of the hotel. We would stay here again.
“Good Value for the Location”
The hotel is a few blocks from the Placa de Catulyna making it easy access to the sights of Barcelona & also easy access to the Aerobus. The neighbourhood is part of the university so there is lots of activity going on. The hotel was modern and the staff were helpful and considerate.
“Excellent”
Hotel is easily accessible, in a very nice neighborhood, close to central Barcelona attractions, easy access to and from airport to bus and subway lines, with nice local cafe's for breakfast or a snack nearby. Staff was very helpful and courteous.
“Above expectations”
Clean, great value 3-star hotel. Great location. Staff helpful and spoke good level of English. For anyone choosing to stay here it's definitely worth getting the bus from the airport rather than the train as the Aerobus (5 euro for a single ticket) stops merely a stones throw from the hotel at the Place Universitat. If you get the train/metro it'll cheaper but you'll have to change trains and lug suitcases around and about the station and streets in pretty sticky weather!
“Great choice”
The Caledonian is in a great location. It is also near to bus and metro stops so it is easy to reach other neighborhoods of Barcelona. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was clean and quiet.
“Excellent Hotel in a great location”
After reading mostly positive reviews I decided on the Caledonian for my first trip to Barcelona and i was definitely not disappointed. The check-in went really smooth and i was into my hotel room in about 5 minutes. The room itself was very clean, up to date and overall a good value. As some other people have mentioned the rooms are small compared to US hotel rooms but that should be expected. The only complaint about the room was that the bed was a little hard but not drastically uncomfortable. It was more than enough to get a good nights sleep. If you're worried about the size of the standard room, you could always upgrade to the next larger room. For me, the room was exactly what i needed. I should mention that the mini bar in the room is stocked with good products at a VERY reasonable price. I didn't eat the breakfast but i heard it was pretty good. I found that you could eat breakfast at one of the many restaurants in the area for about half as much. I usually left early in the mornings but always returned to a spotless organized room. The housekeeping staff was so honest that they never even touched the tip money i left them on the night stand! The hotel is a few minutes walk from Placa Catalunya, Placa Universitat and La Rambla. Its just far enough away so you're able to get a good nights sleep and not be bothered by any foot or motor vehicle traffic in the middle of the night. Overall i would definitely recommend this hotel to any of my friends or family.
“A nice hotel”
Friendly and helpful staff. Clean rooms. Lots of local shops nearby.
“great 3 star hotel, and a fantastic location!”
When I checked-in, staff was friendly. My room was great. It was very clean and a perfect size for a solo-traveler. Location of this hotel is amazing! A block from the Aerobus stop, metro stop, and three different neighborhoods, I couldn't have asked for a better spot. I would stay here again in a second. One side note, when you leave the hotel in the morning you have to tell the front desk what room number you are in. The hotel serves breakfast for 12euros, but I never ate there. Plenty of cute cafes for way cheaper nearby.
“Doug”
Hotel was very clean and staff was extremely helpful. Hotel is right on the Via Cortes which is the main drag through town and is a block from the metro and 4 blocks from the top of the Ramblas. The bed was very hard though would not make it more than 2 nights on it. what a shame.
“Convenient, Comfortable and Economical”
The Caledonian was a cheaper option thanks to an Expedia Special Rate hence, I didn't have high expectations. However, the hotel was smart and the staff very welcoming. I had a room on the back overlooking a large set of courtyards, so it was quiet and comfortable - rooms at the front would have overlooked a very busy road. The only downside was a relatively expensive breakfast at 13 Euros + tax. It's easy to find, just 5 minutes walk from the University Metro Station, and 15 minutes walk from the centre of town. The discovery of this trip, however, was the Art Deco ‘Cafe Dore’ next door to the hotel - an evening 3 course set menu, with 4 choices per course, all of excellent quality and a beer was just under 10 Euro, with a pleasant atmosphere and friendly staff willing to translate menus.
