“Disappointed with our room”

Room was very basic. No kettle or iron - or wardrobe! The wire rack just looks messy with all of your cases etc on it. There was no bath in our bathroom, and no plug-hole in our sink for the first day (even though we'd asked them to sort this just after check-in). 2 bath robes were provided but one of them looked like it had been washed by rabid dogs and was riddled with holes. Our bathroom probably needs updating slightly - new toilet seat etc. The concierge wasn't very helpful, giving the bare minimum of assistance. We dared not ask for detailed advice on local bars etc. All we got was a map given to us, with none of the customary "you are here" explanation. The location is good though. Close to the local bars etc. It's a decent hotel but we certainly didn't have a 4 star experience!

“Excellent service, great stay”

Was really impressed with Hotel Axel. Good location, friendly service, very clean - and good value too. Would strongly recommend to others.

Area recommendations

Classic tourist area, Las Ramblas. Harbour, sea front, Gaudi buildings, shopping.

“Not a good choiced.”

Hotel corridors are dirty as if you are walking on a 1 star horel.Our room floors are comming off. Most hotel staffs doesn;t speak english at all. Elevator hotel is so small only 3-4 people are allowed and if you luggages you have to make 2 trips to pick up your stuff. The only good thing about this hotel is the location very closed to La Rambla & Catalunya.

Area recommendations

La Rambla, Catalunya, Segrada De Familia, Dali's residence, Barceloan Cathedral. Lots of historical events. "Watch out for Pick-Pockets"

“Good hotel but not worth the price”

Axel hotel was a good experience overall though I could not justify the price I had to pay. My room was small (European standard) but had a good view of the main intersection outside the front of the hotel. The people were courteous and spoke excellent English; however the staff was typically hard to reach and spent more time looking me up and down than helping. The restaurant/room service was up to par, but the breakfast buffet was less than adequate for 30 euro a day. Within the surrounding neighborhoods several restaurants offered much better cuisine from around the world and should be taken advantage of rather than the hotel itself. The Sky Bar and Ground Bar were lackluster at best and the drinks only slightly overpriced. Overall I enjoyed my experience at Axel Hotel despite the drawbacks and price tag. I would highly recommend this hotel to others who are interested in a Gay oriented hotel located in an ideal section of the Gayixample portion of Barcelona. Unforunately, my next trip to Barcelona will not be spent at this hotel as, after one trip, it has lost its novelty.

“NUDE MALE PAINTINGS ON THE WALLS”

Good morning, on arrival greeted with the sign VOTED BEST GAY HOTEL IN BARCELONA just a few words of warning. Nothing wrong about the hotel if you have certain male preferences, not suitable for family with young children, paintings on the walls of nude male in all its glory is not suitable for young children who still have nightmares about it. Room itself was small as a matchstick --even though we requested king bed -we received 2 single beds, on enquiry ?they got zipped up to make king how bizzare. Staff nice and polite , location close to centre, breakfast good, swimming pool very small and wather very cold In summary not suitable for families,, owners own taste should stay with him.

“Fantastic Break!”

Good start! We arrived and checked in without any problems! The hotel was clean, organised and absolutely fine. Room was comfortable and clean and serviced regularly without any hitches. We asked for a 'late checkout' which suited us more, and there was no hesitation in organising it. An additional charge of course...but that was our choice. Breakfasts were excellent. The weather was extremely hot while we were there, so the hotel rooftop Sky Bar and pool was an excellent place to sunbath and relax. The surrounding area had plenty of shops, bars and restaurants etc. It was an easy walk down to the main shopping area where taxis were also readily available. We had no problems finding things to do! The only problem was the break was too short!

Must see

Sagrada Familia - Awe inspiring and breath-taking! Montjuic - Interesting place with spectacular views of the port and surrounding area. Ride up all the way on the cable car and then go back down half way by cable car and explore the parks. The best bit is then taking another cable car ride across the port to come down to earth in Barcelonetta. Exhilarating...if you don't mind heights! Las Ramblas - Teeming with life, shops, bars and restaurants...amazing atmosphere.

“Not worth the price and, if internet connection is important for you, don't even think of this hotel”

The hotel was pretty good in a number of aspects: - Top floor swimming pool and bar is quite nice - The hotel is specially clean and the Housekeeping staff is incredibly efficient - Location is perfect! On the weaknesses: - The hotel has an awkward decoration with some unecessarily explicit male nudity that in some cases is quite distasteful - The very weak point of this hotel is that internet is incredibly slow anywhere in the hotel. In addition to that, for rooms that are not by the lifts, the internet connection does not work at all. So, if internet is important for you, do not even think of staying in this hotel. Management knows about it, but does not seem to want to act on it.

“weekend in Barcelona”

It was a great hotel and great staff. It was our first time we stayed at a gay hotel. The shower in the room was bit odd since you could see the person showering from the bedroom. The marketing throughout the hotel was a bit too much, but the staff was very helpful and the hotel was very close to the metro.
